If someone says they can rustproof a defender in a day then it’s surely they are talking poo poo

It is not possible to rust proof [ slow the rust down really ] one in a day. However one day a year going over the vehicle and treating any problems you come across will extend its life a lot.
Today I was renewing my 1990 Ninety's rear bump stops and was able to undo all 4 original retaining nuts and bolts and they were good to reuse.
My preservative of choice is a coating of engine oil with a bit of diesel sprayed inside and out once a year. [pic taken before stop went walkabout.]

Diesel and oil is what I used to use rust hates diesel lol!

depends on the mileage you do and the conditions you drive in though. I do about 30k a year so I need something that is going to be a little more abrasive resistance than old oil and diesel otherwise it has washed off from road spray in a couple of months. I agree you need to do it regularly, but i don't want to have to be doing every couple on months, one a year is plenty!

Same here, that why I choose to use fluid film, good reputation in the states and they get hit pretty hard with the salt over there
 
My 2004 defender is parked less than 10 meters from the sea….. its been there 10 years and it’s there 95 % of the time as I only drive 2000- 2500 miles each year. I spray wax oil on the outside in each year and a mixture of old engine oil, wax oil and diesel into the chassis, it’s never been welded and the various places that do the mot always comment on how good the underside is. I know a lot of folks think wax oil is ****e but it’s stood the test of time for me.
