for some reason my series 3 refuses to go into second either with the engine on or off, all the other gears are fine, but if I do manage to force it into second it will be almost impossible to get it back out again.

The gear change looks fine, engaging with the selector rod which goes back into first, but not forward into second. Im about to take the top off (in situ) to try and see what the selector forks are doing, any other ideas?

Take the top off and see if the springs/detects on the selector fork are jamming. If not, it's probably the first/second syncro unit as it has little slidey blocks that can fail to slide.
If the first selector fork was really worn, it could cause problems (I guess).

Lost a spring in the synchro, perhaps? Seen that lock one up - it would not slide properly.

Agreed getting the top off the transmission is likely the best bet - figure out what's goiing on.

Thanks for the reply, taken top off, detent springs are fine and taken the selector forks off which also look ok, first and second a little worn so will replace; how do you know if the synchro is knackered just by looking at it?
