Hi all. I need to buy a good old hack to tow a horse box. I haven't a great deal of money to throw at the new ride I've been getting some ideas on prices from Autotrader and evilbay. For what I'm looking to spend I'm looking for a series one. Diesel 300 or petrol if fitted with LPG. I'm pretty good with the spanners and appreciate I'm going to need to be at the price I'm buying at but I need all you guru's to point me to the trouble spots. So I'm looking for 93-96 condition is more important than age or goodies. Can anybody give me pointers as to what to look for when buying? Not the general stuff like matching numbers etc more the specific issues relating to the Disco? Oh and what's the difference between the 200 and 300 diesels?

Cheers all

welcome, disco 300tdi, look to see it has a boot floor, then look for rust and rust everywhere :D

Rust... Everywhere. I hope you enjoy welding :)
Boot floors, sills, inner wings, chassis, just about everywhere. Condition is far more important than age/model. Parts are cheap and plentiful, best to buy the best condition one you can get for your money, rather than focus on a specific model

Cheers guys. Is there any specific mechanical bits to watch out for?Or right b'stard jobs I should avoid at all costs?

I am now the the proud(ish) owner of a 96 3.9 ES with LPG. Got to see the car at the MOT station. It had just failed on you guessed it RUST!!! but what ever I was going to buy at this price was going to be rough. As long as it pulls the horse box I'm happy. Also the bearing in the alternator is brown bread. I guess an ES with all the goodies will have a 100 Amp alternator? So pick up Monday with 12 months ticket and then the real silly questions will start. Somebody in it's past life has fitted a K&N cone filter. Can't see the point so I'll be replacing with a standard item as soon as I find one.
