Well we are back home now...truck was 25 minutes earlier than eta so thats good!
With difflock on she drives but as you turn the wheel, it grinds and jerks and wants to pull the steering wheel the other way, so I am thinking CV joint is busted and as it gets to the broken part during rotation, it tries to lever the wheel back the other way to be straght again.
Time to don the grubbies and get messy.

Not quite correct, there are a lot of knowledgeable people out there however there are a lot of wannabe mechanics out there too and as an ex AA recovery patrol you would be supervised at what goes on, hence van is usually sent.

Oh yeah, that'll do it - new balls please ( and the rest of it too )
Might be cheaper than a diff .... tho you'll be needing seals and a bit of kero/gasoil/brake cleaner to remove the "mess".
Was it a case of there was no leak from that swivel.... cos it had all leaked out ?

Love the way all the little balls are sitting waiting for you at the bottom of the casing. At least having got it dismantled this far it's mechanically fairly straightforward. I wonder where all the lube went? It looks like someone just forgot to put any in.

Some years ago I was just going back to my 110 in a B&Q car park when I saw an AA van pull up a few spaces down. Being a nosy type I watched while I rolled a fag, just to see the breakdown guy start changing a wheel.
Thing was the "punter" was a muscular young bloke who just stood there watching !!
I've always taken some pride in being able to do that sort of thing within a few minutes on my own.
Whats up with folk these days? Perhaps he had a hernia or something.

It is possible to drive home if this happens to you if you have a few spanners.Remove front prop and then remove the drive flange bolts so nothing in the axle turns,there will be some oil loss.[not in your case ] Also works if your diff is crunched when continued driving could result in shrapnel punching its way out of the casing.

Our breakdown cover is with nationwide and the couple of times I've needed recovery I've explained the problem and I know what's wrong and they've always sent a recovery truck not a spanner monkey.

They sent the man in the van out to me when I blew my 19j engine... Even tho I told them it was destroyed.... Strangely a few years later when I rang and told them I'd ripped the wheel off the hub they sent out Recovery straight away. I guess it must be the way I worded it...

I know people lament the way that youngsters these days have little interest in practical activities, but the art of tinkering with machinery, wood or metal always was a bit of a niche interest. Hence all those craft trades that flourished in days gone by like coopers and weavers and tinsmiths, as well as the ones we still have like mechanics and plumbers and carpenters. The majority of the population would always rather get someone else to do it - no matter how poor they were - than do it themselves.
I wish we'd had things like Landyzone when I was a kid because whilst all the children at school wanted to play football I was much more interested in bashing metal, sawing wood and digging holes. So I grew up rather isolated. It was only later on that some of my contemporaries discovered the pleasures of working with their hands and playing with tools.

One thing I did appreciate was that one of the teachers at my school befriended me and we discovered a mutual interest in DIY activity. I used to go round his house and we did loads of plumbing, wiring, built walls and did woodwork. This sort of thing would be discouraged now - so-called 'safeguarding', and all that - but at the time I think we both got a lot out of it.

I had the gearbox oil cooler pipe give out and empty all the gearbox oil on the road and aswked for them to send a truck .A van turned up with 2 people in it and i told them i needed a tow for 1.5 miles. He got under the car and said he could fix it there and then but didnt have the parts. I said I have 2 new pipes in the boot so go ahead and fix it.
he ordered a truck and i had to wait another hour before it was loaded it on and take me to the garage.
