I pulled my 84 90 CSW SWB 2.25 petrol out of the field!

Hi all, been a while since I checked in!
My old 90 has been languishing in the field for 3 years so I woke her up yesterday! (After putting a blade on my strimmer to cut down the 5' thistles all round it!)

Charged battery and wait for fuel pressure to build up and she roared into life and drove out like a champ!
Then it all went wrong....
There is so much fuel getting into the engine the exhaust is black like a smokey old diesel!
Ok, I 'assume' the float has stuck?
So I soaked the carb in some injector cleaner but the plugs are still fowling and it's a non start now.
I removed the carb this afternoon and after cursing the design that allows only a ring spanner to fit for removal the carb is on the bench.
I gently cracked the top off of the Weber twin choke and struggled to work out what you are supposed to do with the choke linkage? I got it off but I need a better way to put it back.
Anyhoo, is it worth just cleaning out the float valve and replacing the top gasket or do I need to splash out on an expensive rebuild kit?
I don't know where to get good bits and I'm unsure what model the carb is?
Hopefully someone can put me straight on the likley cause of black smoke/non start and the best course of action.
I will try to attach a pic or two.
Cheers.

Paul

Looking at the state of your carburettor, the very least she deserves having a detailed clean and proper rebuild kit bought...you bloody skinflint !!

But thoroughly clean out your complete fuel system before rebuilding including getting some fuel system cleaner into the cylinders.

Carburettors should look like this inside and out...

She's a working girl my old 90 is, no special attentions or baths for her!
I have got clean oil and filter for her so I'm not all bad....
Cash is almost non existent presently, in fact she may have to become my daily driver if I can't get my old CRV through an upcoming MOT.
So looking to get up and running on a skinflint budget.
I already filled the carb with injector cleaner so it's dumped that through the engine as confirmed by dripping plugs!
Kevstar has named the carb model for me so any idea where is best for a rebuild kit?
I did my old 2A many years ago and the kit for that carb was very good but I have no idea where to get a good quality kit now?
I will clean her before MOT.

Back in the 90’s, I rebuilt the same carb on my Series 3, which was retrofitted with a 2.5 petrol engine. The rebuild kit, a genuine one, from a local Indy spec, was around £25. Obviously, it will be more now.

@luggsey , if cash is tight [we've all been there...] it's really worth stripping down the carburettor and soaking the parts in either coca-cola or brake cleaner [or paraffin] overnight. Then rinse and dry and rebuilding with service kit as @Brian P38 . This way you'll know the carb's correctly set up and will be reliable for your day-to-day transport.

Haha, it's not the Volvo driver...it's the carburettor OCD in me. No idea where it comes from, have always had a "thing..." about perfect condition and balanced carbs and fuel combustion o_O Re' the Volvo, her name was Agatha, a 2 door Amazon with original Golde full length canvas sunroof and 360deg quarter lights. By time I'd worked on her two years she went like a dingbat, always pulled a crowd and was such a lovely thing

Shiny, and utterly lovely. I like older Volvos, despite being a biker:confused:

Older Volvo's are such funky things. Hugely underrated and are brilliant, relatively low cost, classic cars. The 544's, Amazons and P1800's great, great fun. Even the later 140 to 260 models are highly thought of. The superb 262C and 780C are both total sleepers, especially the 780C

Nice. You don't see an Amazon that often these days.

Looking into this today it appears the carb service kit doesn't include the top gasket and they only supply one bottom gasket, not the one the engine side of the isolator block...
So I need a kit plus two more gaskets!
Just noticed a mouse nest poking out of the air vent and a small hole in the bulkhead....

Worth checking with the carb experts before you buy a rebuild kit. The new E10 fuel is supposed to attack the rubber diaphragms. Unless you can get a kit guaranteed to be E10 proof it may be worth considering use of super unleaded until we know a bit more. I am told Super should remain at E5 for a while.

That's a really good point!
I understand vehicles with metal fuel tanks are going to cause problems also?

Im pretty sure I have a minted carb somewhere in my workshop but I wont have time to look until the
weekend if I find it you can have it foc. :)
Thanks for your generous offer bud.
I phoned up Devon 4x4 yesterday and for about £55 (ouch!) they can get me a rebuild kit and the two extra gaskets I need.
I stripped the carb jets and float valve yesterday and they look perfect?
Anyhow if I can't get the old girl running with the kit I will let you know.
Paul.
