I need an engine

Ye wammers confirmed that also it all comes down to how much my mechanic wants for his engine all my new heads and gaskets are going on it but coming from a 96 disco I know it will have done more mileage than mine, mi poor baby

It may be an option to get your block re-machined with top hat liners for ultimate peace of mind. I'm always a bit sceptical of mechanics who tell you your engine is knackered 'but i just happen to have a replacement round the back you can have for a good price'. Just my 2 peneth.

Oh no martin iv been down and looked its not so much a crack more of a split that's opened up, and going on the fact im upto around 1200 with heads gaskets and labour the top hats are guna be another 1500 so im lead to believe I just cant afford that so a replacement engine is my only option to keep her off the scrap heap because apart from the engine issue its an awsome car with no other issues, yet

Hi Chris.

Understand the dilemma. The 3.9 engine is just as susceptable to the liner / block problem though. Can your mechanic fully test the 3.9 block before fitting. If its high mileage it may just be a short term fix. Has it been rebuilt or just removed from a disco & sat there?

sort of the same thing so the 3.9 off the classic is the same engine that would mean i can get a 3.9 bare block and use all the stuff off my 4.0 thor engine on it

Yes hes going to fully test the engine as its still in the disco he ownes he collects cars in his yard and the disco is just one of them which was part of a deal he made with a customer of his as he was going to use it as a recovery pickup but never did so hes going to run it before hand and then strip off the heads check the liners before he goes any further, but I know what u are saying I will find out the mileage of it

Hi Saint. Yes, i know that, should have worded correctly. Was trying to say the 3.9 engine being the same as the 4.0 has the same issues with overboring / liner issues etc.

Attention - the GEMS/MEMS(thor) engines have a short-nose camshaft so you will have to fit one of those as well - they are not the same part either - standard items are slightly different for each engine.

You should be able to fit the rest of the gubbins onto the 3.9 - crank sensors, front cover etc etc - providing it has a long-nose crank - but you will need a new cam, lifters and chain.

On a side note also whats everyone's general take on these running on LPG, I know it runs hotter on gas so is this a contributer to HG failure, mines on gas
Only if the Cooling system isn't maintained....had a 3.9 classic on gas and my L322 is on gas...no issues (Rad went due to stone chip and the water pump bearing failed is all but these aren'y bespoke to a Gas install)

Jury is still out on this issue for me. I replaced the Rad, Pump, coolant when i got mine & 10k later still had HG's go (between middle cylinders so no water loss / overheat). Whether this was down to LPG i can't say. But that said, it's better not to meet the devil half way so keeping the cooling system in top order is a must for any rover V8.

I'm sure I read somewhere that LPG makes the V8s run hotter and can cause overheating problems?

edited to add - on top of the already well known overheating issues!
