I was well pleased when I managed to get an oldish but unused original high lift jack for £25 delivered, but how on earth does this thing work?? Dealing with the front looks pretty straightforward, but it looks like I either have the wrong jack or need an extension or adapter to lift the rear (110 Hi Cap).

Before its too late, what do I need???

Ha ha, brilliant. Of course I have no idea! I'd have just tried to work it out and see how it goes but now you've got me worried!

Also I just did a search for what you said and they seem to be yellow? I emailed someone about one of those previously and they told me they were meant for a different brand of jack?

First rule with something dangerous, dont scared, scared makes you nervous, nervous makes dangerous :)

Respect it and learn how to use it and it will be a pwoerful piece of kit, as has been said, as well as lifting, you can winch with it, not only your vehicle but branches and other obsticles.

Not sure what "yellow" thing your on about normally we dont make this so easy for Noobs, buts its a Friday and im killinh the last 10 mins at work!

Genuine High Lift jacks were dark red, I still have the one I bought in the 1980's. There were several other makes, Jackle & Farm Jack are just two, there are other unbranded ones as well.
As you have discovered, lifting the rear of a High-Cap is not as straight forward as lifting a normal model but I have to ask why you bought this type of jack in the first place? If you bought it for maintenance & wheel changing then you have the wrong piece of kit, a screw, bottle or trolly jack placed under the axle is what you need for that and certainly not something as unsteady as a High Lift.
In 25-years of ownership I have used my High Lift only a handful of times on the LR (always off-road) yet numerous times in the garden (lifting out posts, tree-stumps etc) .

If you have a std lr defender jack then you aint got a high lift. Got a pic if it?
 
that link is no help at all, it's got pics of bottle jacks and hi lifts :confused:

is it small and bottle like? or long and ratchety?? if its small and bottle like then you'll be fine, if its long and ratchety then find out the fook it works before u try jacking up ur landy wiv it!! otherwise the finger fairy will be paying u a visit :(
 
Sorry, that's my bad, I didn't check the link. It was supposed to be a pic of the one I have, but I'm doing all this (badly) from my phone. The jack I have is black, about 3 ft in length, and not bottle like at all. It comes in a black vinyl sleeve, and comes with a separate base part. I'm guessing now its just a boggo LR jack, not a high lift.

Thanks for the help so far guys, sorry for perhaps wasting your time (although any knowledge gained is not waste), but lets try again, lets change the direction of this thread...

Does it come with a rachet to wind it up down? Cos that is a std lr defnder jack. Theyre a bit **** but they work. Hi lifts work but can be leathal. Really just for off road use. Get a good 4 ton bottle jack. Not sure how the stad jack fits unde hicap bodies to get into the crossmember.
