I decided to go for the freelander as it was cheap and cheerfull..

right the issue is it cuts out, no warning, nothing just cuts out, all dash lights go out lights/indicators don't work, (hazards and stereo still do)

when you turn key if dash lights don't come on then she wont start just turns over, so keep turning key until all dash lights come on and hey presto she fires straight up.

any body any ideas, I don't think this is going to be crank sensor or the injector wiring?

my idea is either ECU (hopefully not) or what I think is the main relay (blue one sat under main fuse box)

shes a 2.0L L series t reg

hopefully I can find the issue as apart from that shes would be a good little work horse.

if not then its freelander heaven I think.

I didn't see any corrosion today as I lifted fuse box to get to big relay

don't think its ignition as whole car cuts out when driving.

Fair enough..is there a way to check this or is it a case of just swapping out the old for new?
You can buy new ones. Also measure the voltage across the battery with the engine running, and across the lighter socket. You should only see a small voltage drop on the lighter socket when comparing to the battery terminals, if the ignition switch is ok. You could disconnect the battery and take the ignition switch off to have a look at the contacts in the switch. Mine is an auto so may be a different set-up to your manual but there's some pic's over ere of my switch:

You are very likely to be better off doing some basic diagnostics first before randomly substituting components.

Suggest you remove the switch first and blow some compressed air through it and lubricate it - during that process familiarise yourself with the connections, then start to carry a multimeter or other voltage tester. If/when it does it again, start metering until you find where the break in the circuit is. I'm not too familiar with the Freelander wiring but it may be that the fault is before the switch (i.e. fuse, battery connection, etc)

no worries, im going to have a good play around at the weekend to see whats what.

didnt see any corrosion on the inner wing earth, but didnt take battery tray out to look under,

my thoughts are the main relay purely because i loose everything, apart from hazards and stereo..can pick them up of evilbay for about £10 so may try that option 1st..

I would advise getting codes checked first

With it been a L series the obd2 stuff doesn't talk to them

Has to be a hawkeye t4 or the other one peeps on here have

I had this on a lancia - turned out to be the ignition switch

Put some solder onto the switch contacts and hey presto - worked again just fine

Probably. It should have stored a fault code when it cut out.
Just have to post the code on here to see if anyone recognises it.
Mike
If it's a break in the electrical supply, it's unlikely any sensible fault code will be stored, only those that are triggered by low voltage and nowt to do directly with the actual fault.

broken ignition wire .loose fuse holder. loose wiring . nackered ignition switch

it just does not like you ,home sick

disconnect battery for an hour ,reconnect see what happens

il stick odb on and see what if anything crops up, and go from there.. just annoying had to leave it at a family members house as got fed of the stop start all way home lol, may go take a look one night this week.
