Thats what I do by backing off, I dont know James, Ive always been able to induce drag on the bearing, until now. There is no play when its all tightened up so I might just run it and check it after a few miles. I have until Monday to make sure its safe and usable so a good drive in it tomorrow morning will tell me if its working or not.
you should be able to,are they timken bearings

Yeah, I only use Timken, I will check the PT numbers , they were Timken from Bearmach.

My thoughts are, the key washer is compressing the bearing but hitting the end of the threaded part of the stub axle and stopping there, thats the only reason why I can see this happening, tomorrow I will try a bigger washer and see if that clears the shoulder on the stub axle and causes drag, if it does the hub has to be worn.

I stripped one off a 90 last week to see if Stub Axle would fit on my Disco but they were different. the later Stubs are shorter. You can have the hub if you want it,

where the loose race sits in hub is there signs of wear from bearing rotating, meaning race is sitting nearer to the other race than should

I didn't think to look, but that can be the only possible cause that I can think of. Which would also account for the play as the old bearings visually looked pretty decent.

I might just take you up on that, hold that thought!

Will do mate, Ive buttoned it all back up and it seems to be working Ok, I will run it for a few days and check for play again, but either way that hub and possibly the stub are worn to the point where I wont be able to adjust the bearings.
