How much oil is too much?

I've just done my first Landy oil change, and it mostly went well, but I have overfilled it a bit...

I put in a full 5l, then 1l from the next bottle, and ran it as recommended at www.discovery2.co.uk / Oil and Filter change (brilliant guide, really clear!). Then, I clearly added a bit too much, the dipstick has oil about 5mm above the 'Max' marker when on the flat.

So, what should I do? I'm guessing the options are syphon some out, or leave it, and guessing syphoning is the way? A colleage suggests easing the sump plug open and allowing a bit to drain, but I'd be too nervous to do that...
 
That's not too difficult to do. Just be gentle.. Undo the drainplug and let small quantities of oil out.

Get a proper size receptacle able to hold ALL the oil you put in, place it beneath the drain plug and remove the plug. It will be messy. If you can let out just a bit of the oil and then reinsert the plug, that would work, but you may have to drain it all because trying to get the plug back in while oil is coming out of the hole could be an oil in your armpits challenge.

You can do it.

If syphoning doesn't work I'll start with the 'high up' solutions least likely to dump 7.5 litres of oil.

7.5, you say, not 7.2? Yes, 7.5, because, although I had looked at RAVE first and read 7.2, and the discovery2 page says 7.2, my brain was telling me 7.5, so that's what I expected to put in it. So it makes sense now why it looks about 0.3 litres high on the dipstick). :doh:
 
I would say slightly overfilling isn't going to be a problem, but if you are worried there's a lot more in there then drain some.

leave it alone, nothing wrong with a little over fill.
 
I did this on my 300 once and all I did was remove oil filler cap then put a tub under the drain plug and LOOSEN the drain plug until you get a steady drip. Go and have a cup of tea then come back and check. check the dip stick,tighten the plug, replace filler cap and drive of into the sunset with a smug look on your face :D

I couldn't pluck up the courage to drain it from the sump, and had a holiday trip coming up before I read the surge of "it'll be fine" posts, so I started with plan A - siphoning

A few metres of oxygen tubing down the dipstick hole siphoned 1/3 litre out perfectly, it's now sitting on the 'full' line. It was slow, but I wasn't in a hurry!

did you get a taste?????? lol diesel tastes like crap, petrol a bit better but engine oil, not so good!
