How much oil does your 19j breath ? and oil coming from turbo?

The 19j has started blowing more smoke than ever out of the top of the crank case.
As Turboman quoted above our mechanic (two complex for a welder, me) agreed and put it down to either:-

Head gasket,
Cracked piston,
Very worn engine,
Vacuum pump may be at fault.

He is going to strip the head and diagnose in the next couple of days.

Now saving the pennies for a disco 1 with a 200tdi. He said by one, run it for a couple of months then if ok put tdi in fender and strip and sell parts form disco.

Oh he did suggest swapping rear axle so as to have disk brakes all round.

Just fitted a catch can to see how much oil it breath's and keep the air filter cleaner for longer.

Will now keep an eye on it now and see what's happening.

Just the hose from air-box to turbo to change next as it's soaked in oil.

Then the turbo should feed the engine clean air once again.

Here is the new catch can with all new oil free hoses from air box to turbo.

Cost about £50 for the lot, which is better than the single pipe from land rover.

Not much oil showing after new head gasket fitted 2 weeks ago

Motor is running better but need to see how the can goes, certainly looks a lot better.

That looks like a tidy job, a big improvement on the standard set-up. Nice to have see through pipes, you will see any oil running around in there, before it has a chance to give trouble.
I like your intake pipe setup too, that metal tube will be much less likely to collapse inside than standard item.

I stuck my breather hose into a coke can that I cable tied in place. Done 600miles in 3 trips and after the first trip there was only like a half teaspoon in the can. Checked again yesterday and the can was half full after 400miles.
I did take it easy on the first trip but drove it on a bit the last two trips. The journey is motorway for 125miles and was traveling at 70mph as indicated on the Speedo but phone GPS was saying 100kmph(so 60mph)
Will a new head gasket help slow down the spitting of oil?
Not gona spend money on this engine just want it to survive another 3months maybe.

With the engine running, remove the oil filler on the top of the rocker box. If there is gas and oil vapour streaming out, it is a sign of crankcase pressure. If it is bad, remove the head, check carefully for cracked pistons and head, look carefully between the valves! If all seems well, head gasket may help! :)

Yes checked there. Seems like quite a bit of vapour..

What you think?

Link doesn't work for me, and if it is a vid of your engine it would take all night for me to watch it, out internet connection is terrible! :D

Vapour is normal, it is whether the vapour is being forced out under pressure, often you will see a distinct chugging of vapour as the gases in the engine are pumped up a pushrod tube or by a cracked piston!

I haven't checked the my tappets and that to be honest. Will have to look into that. I think my brakes are good but will give it a closer look.
