Nope, they do 10W40 at £17 and 15W40 at £18 (Chevron brand in big blue containers). They do your standard Magnatec etc. at about 10% cheaper than average.

Time to invest a fiver in the EGR blanking plate, and up your mpg by at least 10%, meaning about 23 mpg will be way over 25 mpg .... and probably a lot more.

I spent a lot of time reading up on the blanking plate [incl. an early recommendatuion from you] and decided, until I have chance to have a good cruise in it instead of these short journeys, I'll hold off.

To be honest, I was all for it until I spoke to my pal [mechanic] who said he'd heard of it but wasn't convinced.

I suppose I need more convincing that it won't cause problems later on and does really help mpg.

If it helps, I 've just bought an EGR blanking kit (awaiting for it to arrive) and whilst twiddling my thumbs this morn I thought I'd just prepare the ground for fitting it.

So loosened the bolts and jubilee clips (intercooler hose), I had a look at what the EGR system is putting back into my engine. It's a bit like Marmite but worse - black slimy tar stuff, which is being 'injected' into the inlet manifold and therefore the engine. I HAVE NO DOUBTS NOW - it's gotta go and go now !!

It was only ever there as a poor basic engineered solution to passing the then in force, polution regs - it's rubbish, always was always will be.

If after this modification is done your car runs on clear air instead of polluted air, is it likely to be better or worse for the engine?

Tough one huh !!

You ought to just take a minute to take off the hose and have a look for yourself on your car.
 
So the opinions of hundreds if not thousands of landrover owners and drivers some of whom are very highly qualified mechanics and engineers doesn't count for squat but the opinion of a friend who doesn't sound like he knows anything at all about landrovers does? Yep that makes perfect sense. I'll bet you're one of those people who always touches the paint when ever they see a wetpaint sign because they don't believe what the sign says.
 
Don't get me started on those 'heavy plant crossing' signs.

Been caught out far too often with those.

I sat on a park bench once that had just been painted, sign said 'not dry paint'.
Go figure, huh?

And I won't dare tell you about the first time I bought a car with cruise control.

A 'heavey plant crossing' sign usually merans a possible off road route - Yep . . and I'm one of those 'sceptical' types as well . . . but I have found some wicked off road routes by ignoring the 'unsuitable for vehicles' sign :mad:

Of course it should say ONLY suitable for '4x4's and tractors' ;)

It depends on whether you see a glass as 'half empty' or 'half full' at the end of the day !!

(and I have at least one pair of Jeans with fasionable white patches on the back of the legs) :D :D :D :D
 
i have a 300 tdi on a r reg 98 i find that its averageing about 35 mpg mind i dont drive it hard only when i pulling the digger around, personally i think there great i have tried other 4x4 and have found the disco is cheap to maintain aswell, but be warned they do suffer rot spots so if you are intending getting one take your time and get a real good one ?
i was lucky very lucky ........ dont think i would get any other than a landrover ( hwos that for loyalty )

Me neither, I have a bit newer Disco 2 TD5 '04 (one of the last to be made) and I have owned and driven LR's (series, defenders etc for over 30 years) :) :) :) :)

No going back now - Disco 3 TDV6 next, but I think when I win the lottery

why didnt you bolt the blanking plate straight to the manifold and loose the rest of it?

Hi Battenburg, no, you absolutely did not f*** up yours if you fixed the plate directly to the manifold. That's probably the best way.

I tried to budge the manifold bolts and they didn't want to play, whereas the after EGR bolts came out sweet as a nut. The other justification (for being lazy!) is that it meant that I could leave the valve alone and still connected to the vacuum pipe.

If I get problems with the EGR valve blowing up or something, then at least I can saw it off which will give me better access to those manifold bolts. Although I can't on the face of it see why I should get problems as the EGR is only a form of wastgate for the exhaust pipe, which is a much larger diameter.
 
I can't comment with any degree of accuracy on fuel consumption, but today I took my Tdi 300 (minus EGR) out today for a bit of a run, flowing a-roads, undulating country - and I must say that I was surprised at the performance.

Under normal, light throttle loads she seems smoother and quieter, climbs hills more readily and generally a bit more eager.

So I thought I would give her a bit of a pipe-opener - well, well, well, she really flies, only took her her to about 80mph (there are rules you know) but what surprised me most was her responsiveness - very good and well worth the £20 it cost.

Feeling quite chuft now, actually......................
