How to fit a push start on a defender ?

So you need to fit a switch to send live to ign / glow plugs ( this must be a latching switch )
then fit a PTC ( push to contact) switch to starter circuit.

You can buy both of these a panel on ebay etc ( like an aircraft switch with cover, with a push button next to it)

Ign is same as pos 2 on key switch
PTT is same as pos 3 on key switch

In the most basic installation, All can be wired direct to switch at rear of key barrel on steering column, (i would use a relay for the starter button due to the high current required)

Depending on the model of defender and year as per the wiring diagram Exampe Pic below you dont need the second switch in the pic just the first and second from left

So your still keeping the ignition switch and its key then
Also I expect there’s a starter relay already existing (my RR had one in 1987) and the Defender was launched in 1990).

IMO I fail to see the need to fit such a thing in the first place, with or without leaving the key / barrel functioning.

Done this on my Brothers Escort many years ago. It was stolen/recovered and ign' barrel had been smashed off.
I used a three position (Off/ON/On) headlight switch and a sprung off Carling type switch. These where hidden within the dash but easily accessible.
Being an Escort door was easily opened so if I ever happened to see it parked up at the shops I would jump in and park it somewhere else !
