How do you secure the spare wheel on the back door

Just fitted a swing away carrier but the wheel's just bolted to it

Short of a chain and padlock to add to the rattles what's the neatest way of stopping it getting nicked

I had to replace the wheel bolts on it for M16 ones as the threads were chewed on he original bolts so not sure if a locking wheel nut will fit

It's taken me ages to paint and fit and weld new bolts in the spare wheel carrier

It's definitely staying on the outside :p


I'll look at the padlock idea but it'd need to be a waterproof one or I can see it seizing up pretty fast

I've seen some wheels with some sort of locking cable, just wondered what it was
 
Fit locking wheel nuts to each stud (different codes if possible), doesn't stop the determined thief with a universal nut remover but will stop the opportunist.
As for padlock & chain, a plastic coated motorcycle one is best and then wrap it in & out until is it tight and not swinging around. Lubricate the lock from time to time so you can get it off when needs be.
Finally fit a wheel cover. Not only does this prevent UV light damaging the tyre but it stops pople checking out the spare (assuming it is a matching rim & fitted with good tyre).
The spares on both my 90 and my wife's Freelander are fitted like this, both are matching alloys c/w brand new tyres so it pays to take sensible precautions.
 
I realise this may sound stupid, but I fitted one of the security wheel nuts with the removable caps, as I only had 4 security wheel nuts so if any one wants to nick the wheels quickly they will only be able to nick the spare if they have the correct socket,
YES I know if the scum or pikies want them they will succeed even if they need a cuttin torch:eek: but it all takes time
 
You can get locking wheel covers for about £100, but most are shiny stainless steel which doesn't go well with a Landy. A cover is always a help, as the thief isn't tempted by seeing a good wheel and tyre.
 
I have a tatty alloy with a much worn tyre on the back, under a wheel cover. I though no point spending on a modular steel and BFG just to have it hang of the rear door and wait to get nicked.

It's would only be a short use temporary anyway!:)

Wheel locking nut but to be honest if they want it they will get it :)
 
Weld it on?

Short of that the chain and padlock is the best bet, get a decent motorbike one, the cable ones are good and very hard to cut, don't get a cheap padlock though as that just defeats the object of it all, I can break a cheap lock in about 5 seconds with only a lump hammer and a chisel...
 
My spare is bolted to the back door. It's quite worn - basically knackered. Legal, but pretty worn and fitted to a bog standard LR steel hub. It'd probably get you home without bursting, but not really worth nicking. ;)
