Hello to All!!!
Well today was.....was the day to replace the crankshaft pulley .
I had the wrench made for the tensioner all beautiful and perfect......
HUSTON WE HAVE A PROBLEM!!!!
i try to undo the tensioner (anti clockwise) and it doesnt release the belt tension it moves like it undoing the bolt, but doesnt release the tension!!!!????

I thought give it a squirt of wd40 and let it seat for a day or two.
But before i would need yuour opinions on the subject.

Which tensioner? I have recently been doing my tensioners depending on what belt you mean and what model of Freelander you have it changes.

There is the cambelt pulley tensioner of which the bolt is recommended to be replaced when undone anyway so may as well send it home if it is stuck 😂

There is the AC / Alternator pulley tensioner which I believe no bolts need to be undone you can get a ratchet and pull it towards you (away from tensioning) and it should pull back no issues, if it has been overheated it may be siezed in which you can just take off the bolts surrounding it, you will need a flat head spanner to get it off, the belt will be in the way

Then comes the power steering belt pulley tensioner which works the same way as the above pulley.

It is important to note that the Cambelt pulley needs the bolt loosened and then the pulley can be spun (not the bolt) with an alan wrench to undo it, I am not sure if that is the same for the VVC models or those with automatic tensioners but I believe they simply have a spring that pulls it tight which would need to be removed and likely replaced.

Edit: Or just cut the belt, may as well replace it while you are down there.

I'm presuming this is an FL1 Td4 ? if so there is a nut which you can tighten at the rear of the tensioner.

Also only use corteco pulley if it needs changing.

Hello its a facelift 2004, TD4 . M47 engine

So if its like the photos you send , its not a tensioner but just a pulley...how does it release tension?

The tensioner bolt does tend to loosen on the TD4 because of the direction you need to move it with the 24mm spanner.

So as said above tighten the nut shown in the photo above (and below)

I understand your confusion !!

The bit you can't see behind the pulley is that it is on a spring with a crank on the spindle so that the pulley, when turned, moves on an arc into the belt space and hence loosens the belt.

You may need to tighten the rear nut as you are not turning the 24mm bolt head to tighten or loosen it you are scribing an arc with the pulley assembly by turning the bolt.

It is jolly springy. I use a 15/16 inch spanner as it is a better fit than 24mm but be ready to hold it while you slide the belt off. Don't put your pinkies where they can get trapped if spanner slips off and finger between belt and pulley !!!

Let me see if i get it right .
So i always need to have a wrench on the back , besides de 24mm?!
Because if not. Its what happens my 24mm bolt spins without relasing tension!!?
 
I can't recall for sure but think you turn clockwise. once you tighten the nut you turn the tensioner clockwise so tighten it further.

What does manual.say ??

Check the direction but it makes sense or it would just unscrew as you say.
 
I thought about being clockwise....but if you see in the videos they all push towards the front of the car (anticlockwise)
Its very.....very stiff when tryed clockwise.
Thats why i ask the forum if i was doing something wrong.
No matter what a tensioner needs to release and apply tension.....

Looks.like the holding nut is a reverse thread and you turn the 24mm anti clockwise
 
Another thing that confuses me its the image below......So its not the 24 mmm.
Making (on the picture) that the tensioner pulley.....

Ok. So im back to stage one.
Before anything thank you for the help.
So mine if i turn it anti-clockwise doesnt release what can i do !? 😞
 
The bolt isn’t going to ‘release’. The pulley is going to move as you ‘turn’ on the bolt. The pulley will move over and release some of the tension on the belt.
 
You need to stop the bolt from turning. The link I posted, above, says the back nut is a reverse thread.

If that is tight then the 24mm will release the tension when turned.
