Hose keeps splitting

Good morning to you.
Got a bit of a head scratcher here. I have a 110 300tdi with 150,000 miles. In the past 4 months it has got through 3 oil breather hoses. The first time, I noticed it was just a random piece of hose so I cut an inch out of it and reattached it. Then it split agin so I bought a replacement Bearmach and last week that one split . The split is always in the same place and appears in the same way. It almost looks like its been cut with a Stanley knife. I got this pic from the internet and have put a line where the split occurs. (just above the finger).
Any idea why this is happening?

Pipe made of poor material. and/or your jubilee clip is sharp around the edge.
I wondered that as well and it was the first thing I checked. The split occurs about 1/2 inch down from the clip and away from the metal pipe. The jubilee clips don’t have any sharp edges anyway. I just bought another Bearmach hose and will try that.
Watch this space.....

When the engine is hot and ticking over, carefully remove the oil filler cap, if theres any pressure you have greater issues.

It might be an edge on the stubby metal pipe it connects to?

Mine gets through one about every 3 years (I now buy them in pairs!). The last one I had seemed a bit too long so was pushing up on the edge of the spigot on he head. I tried shortening the pipe a bit (on the straight section) so it fitted better but it still went in the same place at about the same time. Think its just cheap parts and a hot engine, not tried an original LR one (if they are available) but at a couple of quid every few years I'm not to bothered, especially as I keep a spare in stock.

Just been for a long drive, removed cap and...........nothing happened. Hoses aren’t pressured and no mayo in water or oil. As another poster has said, it may just be cheaper quality hoses.

I had a similar problem and replaced the hose. After about 3000 miles it collapsed at the bend. Britpart. Generally I avoid their stuff, but, I thought, what could go wrong with a little bit of hose?
I fixed mine temporarily with a jubilee clip around the collapse, but I'll get a genuine part somewhere, I hope.

I dont know much about the 300 tdi (I have a TD5) so just thinking aloud, not knowing where/how the pipe is fixed at the other end or mid way, but could the engine mounts be soft or shot allowing exessive movement and strain on the pipe. Might be talking out of my a#se rather than the top of my head but there you go.

The pipe goes from the cylinder head to a crankcase breather fitting, there is no relative movement between either ends of the pipe. Unfortunately looks like you weren't talking from the top of your head!:p:D

Thats good news.
Its also called the low orbit test, hot engine at idle remove the cap and if it blows the cap into orbit its shagged:D

Is there a silicone version available?

Yes there is, and in a variety of attractive colours. Shame they don’t do one in a faded green/browny yucky colour.

If it's splitting in the same place could be there is a bit of sharp rag on the pipe the hose is attaching too and this is causing it to split
