Honest Opinions on Line-X as a respray.

Since my current black paint job was very poorly done (not by me) and peels off under a weak pressure wash revealing the previous white coat, eventually it will look ridiculous.

So looking into getting it done again. I can only guess 'normal' paint will just scratch and become damaged after a day out laning and then ill end up back in this position a few years later. Thought about wrapping too but i'm guessing that will just tear instead of scratch.

So thought about Line-X, however heard many conflicting stories about using on such a large scale. Though it is near enough indestructible paint too the point where it actually has minor ballistic properties! Also to the point it can only be removed by angle grinder...

But I'll never really have to worry about the paint, I know it will fade but in the end it will always look 'smart' and hopefully keep it a bit more water tight! lol

Finally had a quick word with the guy at my local Line-X place he stated rough quote for a 90 covered + parts like cage, bull bars etc.. inc rub down would be £1800.00 for standard black.

So what you chaps think?

There's a guy about on here somewhere who does the videos for lowrangers, in one of those videos a wrapped fender gets abused and the wrap seems to cope very well. I am sure someone can point you in the direction of the right person, his name evades me right now, who will know what wrap this was.

Though thats only the one outing, regular paint would probably hold up almost as well. Though what would it look like at the end of 2 years?
 
Line-x isnt a wrap

Its a Polyurea spray on covering. I have had it sprayed at work and its very impressive stuff. There are quite a few other companies out there that can offer it much cheaper.

Note that Line-x is a franchise only, nothing special about their product. Its just a brand name for them. They dont make the chemicals or the spray equipment.

That vinyl wrap is damn near bullet proof. Line-x will fade in time and very hard to get it clean. We use that in our pickup and does a good job of not seeing rust, But very hard to clean out and dirt sticks like glue and will never look like new again, no matter how well you wash it.
 
I know it will fade but they have another product now which 'prevents' that.

Not going to be done for a while so plenty of time to decide. It does also look very cool :cool:
 
I think it looks bloody terrible as a paint job. Its great for a protective coating for load beds but heavy rough and captures dirt as a paint

Just get it 2 pack'd, hard, isnt going to wash off and lasts forever with a good clear coat
 
i like the idea but not the finish. i also wouldn't pay 1800 for a defender spray job.. unless you never go off road.

it'll still get damaged if you hit rocks or damage a panel.

fair enough for tree scratches and little things.

you'd also never get that money back.. yeah the price is the main thing that would put me off.
 
Its a Defender never going to get the money back anyway!

True, though in just over 2 years with many lanes and P&Ps done theres very minor panel damage, all of which can be repaired pretty easily.
 
Haha just had a bit of work done by Gigglepin 4x4 along with a health check.

Jesus there is rather alot wrong... some I can do some I cant.

Nice to know all those noises i was hearing wernt in my imagination! lol
 
The rough finish of Line-X is a deliberate result of the spraying technique. Sprayed normally it's quite a smooth finish. Personally I really like the rugged look of it and £1800 to spray a whole vehicle isn't that bad a price.
 
Really? I had no idea. In that respect id probably have the body work done rough then things like the rock sliders, steering guard done smooth!

£1500 for a standard 90 or £1800 for the 90 plus all my bits. He did say that you can buy all the required 'ingredients' to do it yourself for £500. Though with a paint you'll never get off id rather have it done pro... lol

Its not paint, its a coating that sprays (properly) to about 2mm thick per layer and goes off in 10 seconds.

Its not tacky or sticky so whatever that stuff is thats sprayed on a pickupbed that isnt cleaning up isnt polyurea. Or it may be, but the mix was wrong so it hasnt reacted properly... either way its not right

I have used polyurea at work (which is what line-x spray) to provide bunded tanks to contain materials you dont want getting out, to remove material off walls (i.e you spray it on then its bloody hard to get off, but when you do it pulls off all the contamination) and various other jobs.

You can line pipes with it to prevent wear etc

The spray equipment is about £25,000 to buy and the chemicals were about a £1200 per set of 2 barrels which would cover about 200 metres squared when we spray it.

Its normally VERY smooth (which we need it to be in order to decontaminate it) and it insulates well.

The matt finish as previously mentioned is just a way its been applied (I presume from a further spray distance so that it starts reacting before hitting the surface of the item you are spraying)
 
sounds like the guy before you didnt prep propper....

jet wash the black off , sand down the white and give it a key surface

roll on paint of your choice.

saw a lad on SLROCs landy in the flesh where he had rollered it white (instead of the usual roller choice of MOD green) and it looked the nuts, really nice job.

I thought that landy in the ebay add looked good - from a distance , it looks terrible in any close ups
 
now .... give that man a coconut.... how ever if you didnt get 100% coverage you would be fecked and you would get accelerated corrosion in that area - sealed in by that lovely paint.
