Block of wood against the flange and hit the block with a lump hammer, just keep your head out of the way. You could also lower the VCU and centre bearings first and the flange usually drops down on it's own. Also a good idea to put something soft on the floor first so as not to damage the drive train. You also have to turn one of the back wheels to give you access to the diffs top flange bolts, they then become the bottom flange bolts

Thanks nickcc, will give that a go in the morning, all the bolts are out and the rear section and vcu are hanging loose (don't worry for my joints, they're not strained and I may replace them all anyway since I'm going to be replacing the vcu and bearings before it goes back on). Fingers crossed the oil will have loosened things up a bit and with any luck it'll drop off just as the neighbor's ginger cat passes underneath.....
