Would be interesting to see what the highest mileage on a Freelander with a K series is. I don't think I've seen one with much more than 120k. My wifes has 105k and is on HG number 3, ie original plus 2. My latest purchase has 120k but is on engine 2 and HG 2. The engine was replaced at 60k and the HG at 100k.

there was so many diff engines LR could have opted for ..or at least simply fitted bigger cooling systems

Do you think it would have made any difference? Some say the design is fundamentally flawed, others say the quality control was the problem and now some swear the new N series head gasket fixes all the issues, I guess time will tell on the last one but anyway you look at it the engine was a total disaster for MG/Rover.

look on ebay motors or autotrader..freelander 1.8s...almost free with ya weekly shopping, where td4s hold price well..your spot on..disaster that still haunts them today..

LOL, thats why my 2002 with 120k on the clock cost me £280. OK it has a few issues with window regulators and the VCU is very tight but it drove home with no problems.
Apart from the HG they are good enough engines.

but you had yours at a very good price..double ya money on spares easy so you was on a no lose..even spending a grand to get it spot on still within the value easy...its the poor folk who pay 2k plus have it a few months then it all goes wrong...Yeah, was out shopping and saw it on the shelf. Agree entirely, it has two new tyres worth around £150 and as they are on the same wheels as the wifes they are a straight swap, the rest of the car is in great condition.
On your second point I bought the wife a 2004 k series last year for nearly £1500 and had to do the HG 3 months after buying it. And the VCU, but then I think you would be very lucky to buy a Freelander with around 100k miles with a good VCU.

Nah! I'm just one of those stupid peeps who can't resist a bargain. Even if it will end up costing me more money and grief in the long run. .
I have just bought parts to repair three windows and do a full service on my new toy. So far total cost inc purchase price around £450 and trying to get it MOT'd for under £500

no good saying i want one of them..do no research..on faults ..what needs to be checked,,,service times...ins..fuel cost ect pay top dollar then say...this is crap..its buyers being bone idle in there research to start with...okay i had 25y as a mechanic,,but knew jack all on freelanders...i spent a month..researching td4...forums..parts everything ..i knew what to look for,,ended up ..53 plate..2 owners ..dealer knew seller well he has had 4 cars off him..second car never been off road and like knew inside..75k..full service,,had vcu and bearings as part of the deal ..2 new tyres on front...why..cause i did me research

I did the research too so when I bought the first car I knew the HG was likely to go any time and I knew the VCU would probably be shot. I had already done a K series HG so wasn't overly concerned and the VCU will be shot on all Freelanders of that mileage, it was still at least £1000 less than an equivalent TD4 and as it will be used for the missus to tootal about in I figured the extra wasn't justified.

i had for fishing..putting a few bikes on the back and cause i liked shape..yes thats odd ...originally it was up for 3600...due ti condition ..immaculate..seen it twice had test run,,prob was ..280 quid tax and 38 mpg was putting folk off

The K series is a good engine that had a few design issues. Those can be overcome these days and at much less cost than a set of injectors for the TD4.
I know of several k's with over 180 K miles and still going strong. The engine is basically sound, except for its appetite for HGs. This is no big deal. Change the gasket while the timing belt is being done and it adds 3 hrs to the job. No big deal for anyone handy with a spanner.
There's little chance of it needing expensive injectors, crank dampers and doesn't have a DMF to add to the cost of a clutch replacement. I'm reasonably sure the full life maintenance costs of a K series Freelander is lower than the TD4 version.

This might be true (never done the maths) but the fear of the HG failing is enough to put most peeps off, I'm too stupid to know any better. At the moment I have 3 of the buggers. All cheap as chips but have raving paranoia permanently now and wake up at night screaming with the three of them trying to kill me and steam pouring out of all of them .
