Indeed. Checker plate is a really bad sign - if you see it on the bottom of doors etc run. Run fast. and Run Far.

I deliberately bought a disco that didnt have a towbar fitted. Yes its going to be an extra job to fit one, but it shows its never been used for towing. One owner from new who has only used low range in the snow. Although i must admit i'm envious of the 18 month old D4 he's replaced it with.

Don't be - it'll be broken more often than not, with all that electronic "stuff" on it, and the electric handbrake !!:D

The towbar comment is good advise too - they are out there - they can take some finding, but they are out there...:)

Bottom end of budget for a tidy one, I would think. As above, maybe a Disco 1, Disco 2s are good value at the moment as well. But buy carefully in either case, serious rust and mechanical issues are expensive to fix.
 
I spent £1500 on my disco 2... £100 more than the guy was offered in part exchange by the garage he bought his new disco from. I was surprised at the price. I spent several months hunting, and ended up looking in the right place at the right time - most D2s were around the £2000 mark but there are 300tdis cheaper.

To be honest a standard spec disco is perfectly good off road - suspension lifts, etc are only really needed for the more extreme stuff, and will seriously affect the on-road handling. None of my discos have had anything extra added from an off road point of view apart from steering guards (which actually reduce clearance slightly but do protect the delicate steering) and all have been brilliant off road on relatively cheap All-Terrain tyres. The 300tdis and the D2 have all been brilliant daily drive cars, whereas the 200tdi was a bit too agricultural for long journeys. I'm driving from Bristol to Chelmsford and back tomorrow and quite looking forward to it in the D2. I would not have wanted to do that journey in a 200tdi.

If you are going to use the rear seats anything other than very occasionally then i'd definitely go for a TD5 - proper seatbelts, proper forward facing seats, and they're definitely more comfy (although less legroom than the sideways facing ones) and I suspect a lot safer!
 
Guess it depends on the mileage you're going to do. Unless its an LPG conversion I understand a mortgage is required every time you go to the petrol station?

I mainly use mine for towing, you don't get much mpg with three tons of cattle hanging off the back bumper, whatever! :D

Managed electronic engine, and it isn't working particularly hard at trailer speeds, not bad at all.

As with any landrover, leadfoot disease will cost you dear at the pump! ;)

True. I put nearly £80 worth of fuel in the disco today. I'm hoping some of it is still there by the end of tomorrow.

Generally speaking my wife's very economical diesel volvo estate is the "family car" that we use all the time for long trips. The Disco will be very much "my" car, and the one i use for scouting stuff and work - i suspect we'll use it for family camping trips but not for long motorway journeys very much.

Car has full Land Rover service history, with 17 stamps in the book. Last service was 65,039, car mileage is now on 65,550. MOT until February 2017, last MOT had two advisory's. One being the registration plate and the second being slight corrosion offside front wheel arch, which is expected on a 22 year old vehicle.
A very clean car for its age however, obviously a few age related marks.
CD player is locked and I do not know the pin, so this will either need unlocking or replacing.
Overall very clean car, my mechanic had a look at it and said its a clean example of the car. Well looked after over the years.
Asking for £1850 OVNO..

Awesome. Only been averaging 3k a year all those years, that is a low mileage! Even my Ninety has managed 126k in 27 years.

Shame it aint a bit more local to here!
