I have a disco 2 td5 manual. I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction with a problem that's just beginning to occur with my gearbox. Starting to have slight difficulty selecting 4th gear changing up or down. A little grinding becoming apparent!

Hello and Welcome to the Looneyzone.

There are a few peeps on here who might be able to give better advice, From my POV I would only ask what oil have you got in it ? when was it last changed with known good quality oil? Mileage now? Have you had it long?

Cheers

Hmmmmm. If it's grinding a bit, sounds like more than dirty oil. How many miles on it? I would suggest an oil change, but check the oil coming out very carefully for any bits, especially in the plug. First thought is a missing tooth or 2 on the synchro hub or a broken detent spring in a synchro hub.

Can you be a bit more descriptive? Changing up / down feel, any other noises? Has the change been sudden?

yeah I'll need to start with an oil change for sure. 134,000 miles. No problems with any other gear changes, only 4th. Just a light grinding, although if I give it a load of time it will go in without grinding. The change came on quite suddenly yes, just noticed it a couple of days ago whilst there had been no problems before.

Hah. Sudden change suggests something broke, and the "taking time means it doesn't grind" all points to a possible synchro hub issue.
Downside is that the only certain way to find out is a box out and strip down, as unless you are very lucky, and repair will need the gear sets out. But wil only 110k on the clock, that R380 gearbox should be good for a while yet

Hi treewise. nothing new to add to what has been suggested but as we are in the same part of the world I thought I would let myself be known in case you need a hand pulling the box. I'm in Dumfries and Galloway and my lanny is sick at the moment but Ill soon be mobile again. Just fyi if ya need a hand :)
