Hi I've just wired my Boomslang kit for the headlights and fitted spots to work on main beam (isolator switch fitted) not that it matters , If i turn sides on just them so far ok , turn ignition key so all warnings lights etc on and dip beam comes on , push light switch to full podition headlights on all work ok dip , but do dip come on with sides when in effect engine running , and sides only when ignition off . Surely my lights were not that bad i never noticed , Or is there some issue ??

If you have a dim dip relay fitted then it will activate the dip beam relay with the ignition on and side lights on.

Dim dip relay ? , no idea . Just fitted this boomslang performance headlight kit , its a plug and play so i cant have it wrong . well ? , the only difference is i wired the earth back to the battery , joined both earths at the front and wired back to the battery .

I have read that twice and still I am not sure what does what!

So - I am going to try and understand this here.

You fitted your Boomslang kit.
Turn on sides you get sides - all normal.
Switch on Ign. and you get normal Ign. stuff and the dip beam comes on? This where I lose track of what you mean.
Push Light switch on to furthest forward ON position and you get dipped headlights as normal.

But you ask if dip comes on (as in headlights running the "dipped" 55W filament?) with "engine running" or Ign. on position - well yes, sort of, on some Defenders it did, it was the Dip-Dim relay which ran the dipped filament in a dimmed state, most have failed by now, some fail on and some fail off and some fail in a sort of overly dimmed state - it could be yours was still sort of working (overly dimmed state), and now the Boomslang relay is getting enough voltage through on Ign. position which is enough to energise the relay on the Boomslang loom thus you now get dipped lights with Ign.

Is that what you are saying?

If not - please relist clearly what is happening.

light switch first position side lights on , light switch still in first position turn ignition on dip beam lights on . push light switch to position 2 headlights normal position dip remains on and . main beam works as should

its a 1996 300tdi , I did use the redundant light plug on the drivers side to activate the spots on main beam . Maybe thats messing something up . I must be using the correct plug connector otherwise spots would not work on full beam only . they would work on dip .

Funny you say that, I noticed the same after fitting mine and thought I done something wrong. Yeah headlights come on with side lights (but dimmer than normal(supposedly)). It’s a pink relay behind the clocks. I’ll find the link I used.

So it maybe right . As it is if engine running , 1st switch position gives side lights and (supposedly dim dip) beam , 2nd position gives dipped/main beam with stalk . Engine off ignition off 1st position sides only . JUST never noticed it before , but only had it 3 weeks . They were extremely dim even on full beam

Well i never knew that , Im happy to run on dipped beam + sides or main beam if that's how it works . Its certainly not a dim dip that i can tell . Going back out to check . When is it not on Dim Dip ... sorry im dim .

One click = side lights and dim headlights
Two clicks = side lights and full brightness headlight

Although, if like mine, the headlight don’t do dim. They just came on full. Hence why I don’t the relay mod.

Just checked , that's what mine is doing , i cant tell any difference in dim dip than dip . Even trying to convince myself there is i still cant . BIG RELIEF , . or we are both wrong . But im happy as it is if you are lol.......... TREBLE CHECKED , momentarily there is some change when switching position from 1st to 2nd , sidelights + dim dip to dip . Only in a flicker , but not in brightness that i can see . i think i can hear the dim/dip relay behind the dash . All other lights working as should , .. Votes go that its the dim/dip relay and that some do dim and some don't . And they tend not to dim/dip when a high performance headlight kit is fitted . Reading all replies here (which im very thankful for) and on another forum Sorry !!! , This is the conclusion i have come to , Not saying its correct but i have dip + high beams and spots work on high good enough for me . thanks gerry

If before you fitted the wiring loom your headlamps glowed dimly when on side lights with the ignition on? if so you have a dim dip relay fitted in the dash. for the new wiring to work as it should this dim dip relay needs to be by-passed, as when ignition on with side lights only the relay for the dip beam is getting enough supply to activate.

Read my post if you have not already. There will be no difference as your lamp is now being switched via a relay which will only give it mains - there is a fundamental difference in switching the lamp via the dip-dim relay and switching another relay via the dip-dim relay.

The flicker between the two points is just the contacts in the switch disconnecting and then connecting via another terminal.

Spot on everyone , Thanks for all the help . What ive just done is left the relay alone and just unplugged the resistor thingy o/s inner wing and YES all is back to normal . Evidently it happens with halo lights , didn't say if a boomslang loom was involved . .. This forum is magic , or should I say its members . Even the Mrs now says go your forum thingy if I'm having issues lol .
