help with buying my first disco please?

Hi im a traitor! I have a series 2a and im flirting with a disco! My age is making me (and my wife who wont drive the 2a) consider something slightly less em bone shatterring? I still love it but hey ho. Anyhoo- can anyone here advise me on the best oldish disco? Im looking at a td5 xs 1999 and wonderring why nobody has bidded on ebay on it yet. I want something simple- not too many electrics and reliable but cheap. i dont do a lot of miles except for hols and i appreciate the 2a's cheap tax (ie zero£s!) I need it for snow and some farm use. Any advise on what to definitely NOT buy wouyld be appreciated-Thanks Yours guiltily looking over his shoulder....chris

Welcome to the forum matey. I had a series 2a a long time ago and now have a disco1 300tdi . If you want something with less leccy bit then go for a disco1, td5's have so many ecu's .I expect others will have different views...each to their own lol.

I'd go for D1 too for the reasons already stated, but again, it's personal preference.

WELCOME! Have a look in the Discovery section. If the D2 has ACE fitted (Active Cornering Enhancement), then you need to make sure it's been looked after, and pro-actively maintain it, otherwise it can cost a lot to put right. However, for a lot less it can be bypassed. Not sure if the ACE was standard on an XS or an option. Mine's a 2001 XS which had ACE fitted and was bypassed before I bought it.

Wheel bearings are a little more pricey than some - they are a self contained unit in the hub, so you're buying a hub, complete with a new ABS sensor and cable not just a bearing when they go (£60 upwards per corner).

The D2 is still "fixable" (mechanically similar to an old Range Rover) despite the ECU etc. but it does need plugging in to a diagnostic to access some faults and resets.

The sunroofs can and probably will leak - the same goes for Disco 1s too!

Disco 2. But buy carefully - look for good condition, lots of history, and a car that looks and feels "right". Takes time but worthwhile in the end Lookout for rust - bodywork on D1, chassis on D2. If DIY is your thing then a TDi is the way to go, but the D2 is still in the realm of real world mechanics - only just, as you will need a diagnostic computer.

Either way, again go for the best condition and history you can find / afford and you won't be sorry. The Disco is lovely Landrover.
