Help, what did I do ?

Problem is that when you crank it resets itself so you can't get any realtime data thats relevant.

Have complained to manufacturer about it as it had 5 codes that persisted, that all cleared once I got it started, spent about £150 on sensors and relays that it said were faulty that clearly aren't - I now have no codes at all.

To add insult to the injury I have since discovered that the original fault I was working on is still there, starts on button from stone cold, ok if you pop to shop and leave it for a few mins but after a few hours its a pig to start.

Thanks to everyone for their help over the days I have been battling with this thing.

B34R - I think this is exactly the issue I had.

I have used my scanner to interrogate some real time data, when the engine is running my Low Pressure Fuel Pump in the wheel arch is reading 330 at idle and 305 at 2000rpm, I believe this is too low, Haynes says is should be 400 and I was told by a LR specialist recently that anything below 350 will cause starting issues.

I have bit the bullet and bought a genuine LR Pump, I am hoping it fixes my warm start problem and also the slight uneven running during the first few minutes which can be felt and seen on the rev counter ( dances slightly ).

Mt truck has done 165k and it is the original LP pump as far as I can tell from the service history.

Fitted my new LP fuel pump this afternoon, initially I was sceptical of the TI Automotive pump as the outgoing and presumably original pump was a Pierburg.

The old pump was only delivering 330kPa, new pump is outputting 372kPa.

Took it for a run and it feels much better, I will find out in a few hours if it has fixed my warm start problem.

I am a little disappointed that it isn't developing the 400kPa that the manual states.

Should the LP pump deliver 400Kpa? I thought 250Kpa was the minimum delivery pressure with ~350Kpa being more normal.
 
Nodge68 : Clearly looking at the values I gave earlier it is not 250kPa.

Having left it 3hrs my truck now starts on the button, so it would seems I have now fixed my warm start fault.

Manual clearly says 400kPa and I was told by a LR expert that 350kPa is the minimum needed for fault free starting.

It would appear he was right as my old pump was below 350 and the new one is above.

I'll re-read the manual then. My LP pressure is 360Kpa at idle, dropping to 330Kpa at full chat. Looks like I'll be needing a new LP in the future too. Mine starts just fine at the moment though. I have got a pressure control valve service kit for the spares box though, just in case. ;)

I thought I would finished off my thread with an update.

The cranking but not firing issue I started this thread off with is fixed, that was the gasket in the HP Fuel Pump Regulator.

The reason I had the car in pieces was to try and fix the warm re-start fault, that I and many other FL owners had.

I had tried everything, so in the end I bit the bullet, removed the injectors and had them professionally tested and cleaned by Swadlincote Diesel Ltd.

They found 1 of the injectors was faulty and was supplying constant fuel, so it was dismantled and repaired ( itemised as Wet Nozzle Seat on the bill ). The others 3 were not faulty but were not spraying an ideal pattern ( Low Fuel Delivery ), I could not justify having them serviced so I settled on repairing the faulty one and having them all cleaned, this included new o-rings and copper washers.

See attached photos, I was blown away when I saw them, the bill came to £258, £32 is their standard charge for inspecting and cleaning an injector and the rebuilt one cost £117. The faulty one needed a new Nozzle, Valve Ball, HP Seal and Solenoid Seal.

Once I popped them back in it fired on the button and has been faultless ever since, that was 4 days ago. The difference is amazing it is like driving a new car and it sounds better too plus I no longer have a pool of diesel collecting around the injectors.

I am hoping that the other 3 injectors will get better over time, I plan on adding a bottle of injector cleaner to each tank full of Diesel for a few months.

I declare my FL fixed !
