From that it looks as though you are running a little bit rich.

Play about a bit more and you should be able to get a clean burn without losing the power.

As I said, it will take some time to get her spot on!

play about with the pump rotation thing? Shall i turn it back towards the block by a mil or so?

i rotated the pump away from the block about 2mm or so initially. By fiddling with the idle and throttle cable (helps if it is run without kinks!) i have got my top end back and got over 110kmh out of it today without to much trouble.

Its just that slight smoking, on start up it does the puff of white for a few secs like normal, then when driving constant small cloud of blackish smoke. If i am on overrun down a hill it doesnt smoke at all, it doesnt smoke once warm and just idling and if i just use enough throttle to maintain speed it doesnt smoke then either.

I cant be that far out from the ideal setup.......

Could do with a few tips regarding setting up the fuel delivery. I am satisfied the timing is spot on etc.

I think I have identified the fuel adjustment bolt (side of the pump facing the block) what way should I turn this (in or out) to change the amount of fuel delivered?

I want to get this smoking sorted. I have driven it a bit is with the initial adjustments I made and it's far far better, much more useable and drivable and a lot quieter aswell.

Could I be doing damage by having it slightly overfilling?

Ed

right this is the bit i want to adjust,

its the black bit (its covering a bolt/locknut arrangement) underneath the throttle arrangement

which way should i turn it and how much to tweak the fuelling side of things?

Ed

ve you had a look at this? Linky

It looks as though the item you're looking at is for the pump internal timing, so I would be inclined not to touch it!

Is that adjustment on the top cover?
Attached two pics which I believe show what it acts upon if on top cover.

A little bit of info written on photos .The same portion the bolt pushes is moved by the accelerator.

Done a few miles now, it seems to have cleared on the smoke unless i am ott with the go pedal. It is far more drive able and usable now, with dare I say it, feels more lively and powerful (lol)

Quite please :-D

Hi all. Couple of question on this.

Do you move the pump with the engine running? Would this allow you to listen to how it runs. Or is it a case of loosen pump, move pump, tighten pump, run engine, adjust, repeat?

I'm curious to know how one identifies "spot on tuning" - is it a bit like focus, i.e. the engine sounds like a bag of spanners either side of the sweet spot?

Also, how much movement of the pump should happen initially. Couple of mm?

Cheers - very useful thread so far.

Thanks,
Dobbs.
i do it static adjust it till it knocks then back till it just stops knocking thats optimum point

Ok had more of a fiddle. I can get it to smoke a lot worse lol

I played with the screw on the side

Now when I start the engine I get a puff of grey/black smoke then it idles clear.

As I drive off I get a constant stream of barely visible black/grey smoke if accelerating briskly, it's most noticeable in 4th gear or at higher revs in lower gears.

If I accelerate gently it is hardly noticeable and only really at night in the headlights of cars behind.

If i cruise gently in 5th at say 55mph just enough throttle to maintain speed it doesn't smoke.

It also doesn't smoke on overrun in any gear if I let off the accelerator

Does that sound ok?

At MOT time I might get it checked over by a diesel specialist anyway, but that's not till feb!

Indirect injection engines often give a little stream of black smoke under hard acceleration, I doubt if that is a problem.
If you are happy with the running of it its probably fine, as you say the acid test will be at MOT time.

Yeah think I will stop fiddling now! I am liable to break it!

I seem to have got it running a smoothly and powerfully (yeah yeah) as I can now. Will see at mot time then :)

Ed

Actually having driven it a fair bit today it's a bit down on top end power. I am going to wind in the fuel screw a bit to give a touch more fuel

Right I believe I have got it spot on.

Seems most powerful (sic) setting found, doesn't knock, sounds smooth at idle, picks up nicely and cruises at 70mph no bother. Smoke is far less.

Passed smoke test at mot average 0.51m2 (max allowed 3.0m2)

Cheers OSD. Your a legend!
