HELP Is it my Clutch OR gearbox

Clutching (LOL) at straws here as I've never took a Landrover clutch system apart .. but your earlier post might give a clue .. "Around the end of the pushrod there was what might have been some sort of plastic cover/seal?? hard to work out what it was as it was all chewed and melted"

Could it be that the plastic thing is a spacer, and that without this the pushrod doesn't push as far as it should? Or is a guide and the pushrod isn't now pushing where it should?

Just a thought ...

Like your thoughts, i have been looking for a parts diagram for the slave cylinder/pushrod assembly to see what that bit of plastic may have been, BUT i cant find one. Ive got the microcat cd but it wont run in windows 7 so i cant check that, I will bring an old laptop home from work today to see if i can get the microcat cd to run as im sure there will be diagram on there....unless someone on here can point me in the right direction.

Well got microcat to work and it looks like that peice of mangled/melted plastic was a pushrod clip landrover part number 576723 @ cost of £2.30 +vat So just ordered one. Also got a new pushrod while i was at it as the one thats in now is i bit worn on the ball end so may as well do it at the same time.

Its obvious what that little peice of mangled plastic was now ive seen a picture of it

Looks like this clip holds the pushrod in place and stops it sliding out of position and in doing so ensures that the cluch is pushed full in when operated SOOoooooo this could be my problem.....i hope.


Well let you know what happens once the clip is delivered and fitted.

Never ever seen a plate cracked like that, would have thought the car would have shuddered and made all sorts of noises though i can see why the lining was shredded, the otherside of the plate which i did not show was shiny and tops of the rivets were worn off.

1. Faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarking hell, never seen a clutch set like that before !!!!

2. That clutch kit looks VERY good value, considoring it's top line gear and a dual-mass flywheel.

Sounds like the one to go for, to me.

Good luck. Do me a favour could you? Let me know how you get on with the spigot bearing replacement please?

Thanks for the reply, Tis impressive the damage done.

Spigot bearing was a sod to remove, to my suprise it was just a tube made of brass??

To get it out i just used a dremil with a small stone in it to sort of cut a groove in the inside face of the bearing which weakened it enought to use a chisel to lever it out.

Once out a little bit of grease and a large socket and hammer was used to tap it back into place. The old bearing looked like it may have never been replaced as it was very worn.

Hi Brian; thanks for that. Last clutch I did I didn't change the spigot bearing but I have heard before that it can be a bit of a sôd.

Yes, the bearing is just a brass tube or ferrule, nothing very fancy at all, but they work !!

The saga continues.

Clutch still not disingaging fully so difficult to get into gear and when in gear with the clutch fully down the landy would creep forward.

After different suggestions i changed the slave and master clutch sylinder and it made No difference which pointed towards a faulty clutch kit, I then contacted the guy i bought the kit off and it turns out hes had 3 kits returned with the same fault........typical that id get one of the dodgy ones. Anyway hes sending me a replacement kit, just means taking the gearbox out again, o well at least the bolts will be easy to get out now lol
Will let you all know how i get on.

Nah the guy was great, no hassle at all.

I rang him about a week ago after i fitted the clutch and was getting problems of not fully disingaging and we discussed a few things and he offered to send a replacement out straight away, i told him to wait till i had changed the slave cylinder first as i was not 100% sure that it was ok. Anyway he rang me back on thursday last week to see how i had got on and left me an answer machine message to call him back which i didnt do till today, anyway he told me then that hes just had 2 kits returned since last speaking to me all with the same fault. The fact that he contacted me shows the guy is not a scammer and i belive that i was just unlucky to get a dodgy kit, **** happens.

For anyone who has been following this misery story


I finally got round to fitting the replacement clutch and IT WORKS!!!!!!!!

Shame the first clutch was faulty but thats life i suppose.

Whilst I was at it I fitted an Ashcroft Central Diff Lock lever :D. Doddle to do, shame about the cost. Can't wait to get to Pea Farm this weekend to try out the clutch AND difflock, Should be almost unstoppable or at least it will be when i make my mind up on which tyres i want :confused:

It will be ......just a warning, if u decide to put mud terrains and want to overcom muddy fields prepare the money for HD halfshafts and CVJ's cause the normal ones wont bear to much the combination of
(low range+locked diff+mud tyres) + deep mud.......i'm telling it from experience
 
Thanks for the tip, Id suspected that may be the case Sooo im going to wait a wee while yet to let my wallet recover fromthe clutch and diff lock lever bill Plus i still cant decide on what tyres i want, ill end up faffing on like a girl all summer :eek: till i find what i want lol
