Hi,
I have attached photos of a relay I have located behind my instrument cluster. I suspect it is the source of an annoying intermittent clicking noise I've been getting for quite some time now. In addition the pins and base of the relay are showing signs of corrosion.

The photos were sourced from ebay but the relay is identical to the one removed from my defender. Any ideas which circuit this creature is part of?

wouldn't be for ur wipers would it

Wow. Thanks for the quick response. But here is where it gets a little interesting... the defender does not start with this relay removed. Upon turning the key I am just getting a very brief flash of the oil pressure icon and glow plug icon. Glow plugs timer does not work and engine does not swing.
The wiring diagrams do not show the wiper system in any of the starting/charging circuits.

Makes any sense?

ur very welcome

i wonder if when removed it breaks the circuit to the system, as it's a 2004 i would assume its electrically controlled ie, ecus fitted etc as it's also obd2 compliant

been trying to find a wiring diagram

is ur the model that doesn't have the egr or cat fitted , named rest of the world wasn't it

will keep searching to see if i can find out why for u

gary

found a wiring diagram

looking at the ign switch, then follow the wire marked G

if u follow the wire it goes to the wiper , would assume when the relay is removed its breaking the circuit and throwing the errors up ????

hopefully one of the more experienced guys who know ur electrical system maybe able to shed some light onto it for u

so is it this relay that's been chattering , imagine the best course of action will be to replace it

sorry i know that's not much help

That looks more than a std relay, see the diagram on the side of the casing, might have cut outs ie for an auto etc

supposed to be for the programmable wiper system but wonder if can be used for other multiple applications

I thought the op said with relay removed he has a no start?

Ive got adjustable intermittent wipers in my 1993 90 and that looks pretty much like a std relay.
All them extra pins are serious overkill for a wiper system

he did , but checking the part numbers it came up with this relay for the wiper system , which is indeed weird

that's why i thought if maybe this same type relay could be used in another application

this was another thing

if u look at the numbers on the end of the relay they appear in this simple relay diagram

Yeh but that schematic says wiper switch not wiper relay?

was also going by the rough generalisation of the numbers within the diagram

u trying to confuse me again, lol

what do u think ref the relay , agree as it doesn't make sense when this relay is removed that it won't start , something is weird , know ur vastly more experianced than myself

wonder if @LeftFoot would u be so kind to take some pics plse, of it in situ and surrounding wires etc , to try and establish of why it's so strange when the relay is removed it doesn't start ??

maybe i've got it totally wrong then and the relay belongs to something else in the system , lol
No sir you are 100% correct! It is indeed the wiper relay. I comfirmed earlier today. Funny thing is... my original issue (which I did not mention) was difficulty starting. Upon turning ignition key the glow plug symbol and oil pressure symbol would both come on but would cut out quickly and remain off while the engine is swinging over. Then eventually they would flicker back on and the engine would immediately fire up. This is usually after almost 10 secs of swinging. Seemed almost like the 12v supply was leaking somewhere. My investigations led me to the mystery relay which I confirmed was indeed the wiper relay at my parts supplier's shop.
Not satisfied that the relay was my problem, I decided to return home for some further trouble-shooting only to realise that upon entering the defender and turning the key I was now getting nothing but an intermittent glow plug symbol and oil pressure symbol. Engine would not swing..
Earlier this year I had similar symptoms as above and it turned out to be my ignition switch which started to break apart. The white plastic disc that contains the contacts separated from the metal base which contained the ball bearing assembly resulting in the spring which returns the key to its correct position after ignition being dislodged. My fix back then was to reassemble the whole lot and secure the metal clips which held the disc in place. It seemed to work until recently with this starting issue. So the bad news is that I had to purchase a new switch that I did not budget for. The good news is that the original one failed directly in front of my parts supplier :). Installed the new one in situ and the landy fires up now with just a mere flick of the key in the ignition. Problem solved... except for the relay which still clicks occasionally. o_O.

Many thanks gstuart.

I think the occasion when I had the relay out and the defender did not start was due to the same ignition switch issue above. What I can do is since the switch has been replaced is take the same relay back out and see if the defender starts. Just for closure.

Images of culprit..
