Tough luck. Check and grease or replace all the other UJ'sWell the grizzly truth….
a point to everyone who said UJ !
but… unfortunately the bearing in the rear diff has completely collapsed, a crown wheel has destroyed itself and there are teeth and bits of swarf throughout the casing.
a new diff is required… quickly.
(Supposed to go on holiday with it on wed)
garage reckon they can source a new one for around £800. Scouring The bay for a 4 pin rear diff for a 4.6 P38 that’s within a 3-4 hour drive of Glasgow but not having a whole lotta luck.
If anyone has any thoughts they’re most welcome !
Thanks again
Bob
Phone William, Bob...he'll have in stock...and NOT stupid money, I assure you!Well the grizzly truth….

Have massaged the seller, thanks for the heads-upComplete rear axle off a 4.6 in Edinburgh on the Bay item 323515542551.
In Lincoln Bob...but supplies Nationwide...Internationally too...so no problem with you living in God's own Country! I've received next-day service. He's a good bloke to deal with too.hey Mike,
Where is William based ?
You will probably get it cheaper if you've massaged him.Have massaged the seller, thanks for the heads-up
That's really handy to you Bob. If you're successful, say "Hi" to the Kingdom of Fife from me!Theres a 2002 in inverkeithing needing broken at u-pullit quoting £72 for a rear diff.
Does the Thor use the same diff as the gems ? mine is a '97
What tools do I need to remove the diff ? any top tips ?
Anything to look out for in terms of damage ?
Thanks again
Bob
That's cheap,is it a 4pin? Gems and Thor are the same Are you doing the job yourself? No special tools required prop off, half shafts removed, drain diff remove bolts around the diff and lift out. Heavy and awkward make sure you orientate the diff,it has to fit in the cutouts in the axle.Theres a 2002 in inverkeithing needing broken at u-pullit quoting £72 for a rear diff.

If you're just taking the diff out don't worry about the orientation.you will have to remove the calipers and carriers, and discs to access the half shaft bolts keep it clean ,wire brush around the diff/ ax!e joint before you pull it. Think the later models were 4pin I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong. My advice go for it it's cheap. How would I tell if it's a 4-pin ?
Its a 2000 4.6 petrol donor car
Yes, I have to do it myself apparently.
what's the best way to orientate the diff ?
-all these questions.
might be easier in the long run just to get the axel from the bay and let the garage do the naughty stuff
But, will investigate try and get a few other tricksy bits at the same time like windscreen trim clips
