Those people that keep telling you "don't get one, they always go wrong" clearly don't know what they are talking about. the Discovery 300tdi is an excellent vehicle if regularly maintained. Many Land Rovers built after the 300tdi started to incorporate more and more electronics which isn't always easily repaired by the home mechanic, consequently some owners were getting big repair bills from garages that didn't really know what they were doing and just kept throwing very expensive parts at problems, unfortunately this still happens and I suspect your friends have heard a horror story from someone's brothers mate down the pub and never actually owned one themselves. I have owned and thoroughly enjoyed my 98 300tdi Disco for nearly eight years now and I've never had any real problems other than wear and tear items, as I said good regular maintenance is the key, parts are plentiful and cheap, most repairs are achievable without having to pay a mechanic and you can go just about anywhere you want as long as your'e not in a hurry. I take mine down to Greece every year so I have to make sure it's kept in good condition as we have to rely on it to get us there and back without any drama which it does every year. I have considered getting a later Disco 4 or Range Rover but I wouldn't be able to maintain one of those myself and although they are fantastic vehicles and far superior in many ways to what I currently have, they are also quite fragile in that there are far more things to go wrong, some of which are pretty complicated and as I wouldn't be able to deal with it myself the repair costs would be out of my league. Don't listen to the miserable old boy down the pub, go and find yourself a decent one that hasn't had too much abuse and isn't too rusty (they all have rust somewhere, some just hide it better than others) and enjoy it.
