Quick note to say hello to everyone, have just bought myself a Discovery 2 ES TD5, so far all seems well, and any annoying quirks and noises have been put straight by using the forum.

Just getting used to the car now and how it behaves and responds, last 4X4 was a G wagen, completely different car, have to say i,m really impressed so far.

What should I look out for, have checked the usual, plastic dowels, air pumps in the rear suspension, wiring loom, oil pump bolts, all fine.

Now need to source a tow bar and roof rack, any ideas whats best.

owdo & welcome to the house of fun - unless i'm mistaken that looks like oslo blue to me (same as my TD5 ES ;))

have you blanked off the EGR yet ? if not check out this thread

Hi Burtonboy, no I haven,t blanked off the EGR yet its one of the jobs to do. Just figuring out heating controls, seems to take an age to warm up, compared to my other car petrol Audi A4, anything I should be worried about, no loss of coolant, temp gauge sits in middle, everthing is fine just covered over a 1000 miles in a week in it, and all seems ok.

sound normal - you have to remember it's a big old 2.5 diesel lump & it takes a while to get up to temp - only really noticed it the last week or so - its only a 3 mile drive to work & my old petrol vectra used to be blasting out hot air after the first mile :) but my TD5 is only just getting warm by the time I get to work:(

you'll probably find it better if you have the heater set to 'ECON' (ie. no need for air conditioning in cold weather)

when I came to get the disco out the garage at 8.0 this morning there were about 5 diesels on the road with the engines running (transits, shoguns, LDV van etc) all warming up for the journey to work :D
 
Cheers thought it was just me being over paranoid, you know how it is when you buy a new car your never 100% sure about till its time to get rid of it.
But so far i,m very happy with it. Getting used to all the noises, turbo and other quirks compared to a petrol car. And I will fit the blanking plate when I get one, are the ones off of ebay any good or should I shop somewhere else.

yep - the ebay ones are fine -get the one that includes the longer bolts to replace the ones you take out & make sure you give the old bolts a good soaking of WD40 for a few days before you try to remove them.

you'll also find the plate easier to fit if you remove the heat shield from above the exhaust manifold (if yours has one) - also give the bolt that holds the heat shield onto the exhaust downpipe a good spray of WD40 as well.

might be worth checking to see if there is a blanking plate fitted already - you should be able to see the 4mm plate between the EGR pipe and the exhaust manifold if there's one already fitted.

If not, it's definately worth doing - really improves the driveability of the disco - esp at low speeds & pulling away at roundabouts, junctions etc.
 
Thanks all, have checked hasn,t been done, have read probably all the posts now connected with this, including the ones about the complete removal of the egr valve and replacing with a length of pipe, i,m just going for the introduction of the plate between the exhaust manifold and the existing pipe, cooler thing.

Thanks again for all your input, and heated seats are the way forward...
