Hello, Help needed re Series II

Hello All,

Got lucky searching for a Landy forum and ended up here!

Hoping you guys will be very kind to me as I'm not a pure blood enthusiast whose rebuilt one of the beasties from the ground up, as our LandRover is really a family project and my Dad needs the lions-share of the credit for keeping it going. She's a great old lady, who's older than me, but has less wrinkles! A Series II, with some IIA parts. A firm favorite with me as she's been in the family from new as far as I know.

However, having some problems with her these days and my dad is getting past wanting to worry with all the maintenance, so I was wondering where the best place is to look for a new home for her. Is there likely to be much interest?
Until fairly recently she was running just fine, and although leaks oil regularily, and has a few quirks (the brakes grab until the've been used a few times), was sound enough.

Anyway, just thought I'd poke my head round the door and say hello.:D

Hi and welcome to the loony zone. ya've certainly come to the right place if yer thinking of letting the old girl go. I'll be more then happy to take her off yer hands. and i won't even charge you that much. say £5 and a packet of jelly babies :D

Wot a gent! I'd hope my dad might get a few jelly beans for her to be honest, but I'll keep you in mind :D A good home would be welcome.
 
:D Oh well, like i said, she's a favorite of mine, but I am sure will be a bargain to someone.

Would help if we could get her started tho. She's usually fine but as not used all that regularily, has this time not been very enthusiastic about going for a run. Never big a problem before. Batteries bound to be knackared, but concerned that the starter might not be playing too... any tips?

Look behind the seats with any luck there will be a starting handle hope your feeling fit :D

On a more serious not if she's any good then you would be looking at £750 and up for a runner.
£1000 up with MOT etc..

Thanks, that is helpful, and I guessed she would be worth something though he will be suprised at that, and would let it go for less if someone was interested in keeping the old girl going. I think the plate is probably interesting to some people too, so perhaps it goes separately, who knows. She has an MOT til Dec, I think. But like I say, probably hasn't been started for a 3 months, hence the current problem.
 
does it turn over at all?
Do you get a clicking sound when you try to start it. ?

If you get nothing at all then it's probabably a dead battery. They don't like been stood for long periods then suddenly be asked to turn an engine over then be left to stand for ages again.

If you get a clicking noise then it's probably the startermotor sticking A tap with an hammer sometimes gets it moving.
 
No, nothing at the moment. I am guessing that the battery has just had it and its nothing more than that, but they've always been able to charge it and get it started before. I don't think the starter clicks, and although I'm not sure exactly what he's tried, its not unlikely that he hasn't taken it off to work it, to make sure its not sticking. Sorry, not much info as I'm not there all the time, so will have to ask and reply later.

Problem is that a new battery's not cheap, and your bog standard Halfords "start on a charger" has probably not got the guts for it. As he wasn't sure if he would get much for her, I think he was concerned about shelling out for a new battery. You're right, Land Rover's need to be used, but its not easy to get in and out of a garage, and they tend to keep it for trips to the dump.:rolleyes:

Well if it was running, chances are it's only a battery. Those "halfrauds" boost starters are really good I used one to start a 110 2.5 diesel that ahd been stood for 18 months.

basically it's gonna be either a flat battery or lack of fuel / fuel not reaching engine. unless you've been really unlucky and the mice have eaten thru the wiring harness.

Thanks for the tip redhand. I'm sure I'll be able to borrow one and try it then. I was just worried it might blow its tiny little mind, but your experience sounds promising. Will give it a go. Cheers

Starter apparently just whirrs, so probably not enough punch to get it engaged properly. It hasn't been taken off, to take a look as its tricky to get to with how it is parked up, so trying the booster will be an easier first option. thanks all.

Wow £47 is good! cheapest I found was closer to £60. I know its still not loads, but if he was thinking of having to give it away, its still money down the toilet. Problem is its a little complicated. Landy may well get given away within family because my Ma's soft (and principled) and Landy is actually hers. She any I both learnt to drive in it - HeHe, watch out suckers!. Anyway its likely that it will then get sold on with no thought, which has me a little miffed. I don't have the hands on, to keep it going so couldn't really justify keeping it myself (shame on me:( ), but would hate to see it just churned for a few jelly beans and my Ma 'n Pa see nothin' when they've looked after it for more than 30 years.
 
i've found pumping a couple of squirts of petrol through using the lever on the fuel pump will do the trick. i've always done that on my ma's 2A before starting, it lives in a field and only runs every couple of blue moons! sometimes takes a few of goes for the starter to engage as well but with it pre primed, a foot full of accelarator and a couple of turns of the engine it'll fire up every time!

with only an old battery and a couple of squirts of fuel it started after 5 years of not moving, the exhaust was so corroded it blew off after that!!
