Hi all, Just joined as I'm looking for as much information as possible before buying. I'm looking at getting a land rover 90 possibly a 1990 model with the 2.5 engine.
Chassis has been treated and is supposedly sound, bodywork looks good with the exception that the bottom of the doors shows paint flaking (possible rusting?)
Is it worth paying for an AA inspection when buying one of these old Landys?

Looking forward to learning from the forum and updating you on my purchase eventually.

On a Thirty year old motor probably not worth the AA check, you would be best to get some one that knows landys to have a look.

Door bottoms are a common issue - the frame rusts, swells up and distorts the ali skin - also probably holding water and crud against same, and rotting it from the inside out....

An independent inspection is always better than nothing - BUT, an inspection by someone who knows 90's is worth far more, as Brian says above....

If you've got the reg number, the MOT history can be quite illuminating - or quite scary

May have been used on an estate only or parked up for a bit. Hence no history if it was sorn'd (no road tax).

Treated chassis... still needs a hammer round it as the covering over of rust is still possible. Yer could end up with needing a new chassis within a few months/years if yer not careful. Someone local on ere may offer to look at it for you.

Why is the BH painted black - there's a clue there .... repairs could be good, or atrocious - be careful..

Those doors are probably ready for the bin - got any pics of the inside of them ?

Then it really does need looking over with a fine tooth comb - where were these MOT's done ? same testing station each time - any service history ? how many miles ? Freshly painted wheels with old tyres on is a bit strange .... put the reg up so we have a look....

Those tyres look like Michelin XYZ's from the pics - good tyres in their day, but NLA for a few years IIRC. So, that with the side wall cracking means you'll be needing a full set of tyres ....

With what ? Seriously - if it has been undersealed, walk away....

I.E. underseal is a product, not a process - "undersealed" specifies the use of said product... ( and is to be avoided at all costs, since it holds water and rots things merrily ). "treated" doesn't really mean anything in isolation .... whereas "treated with Bilt Hamber Dynax UB" means a lot, and stands a good chance of actually achieving something positive...

Waxed could be good if sound but can hold crud in if not treated thoroughly before.

Does drive okay?
- hubs, steering components or bushes could cost a small fortune to be replaced, but they may have already been done ; check history, but take nothing at their word.

Most of all trust your gut instinct. You can always walk away there are plenty about. In my experience when you find the right one for you, will fall in love regardless of condition

Mot history has a lot of cracked tyres.

If they won’t spend to put tyres on it what’s the chance they will maintain the spensive parts
