Heavy oily deposits around air intakes. Is that usual?

Hi,

Just stripped the engine air intake manifold off as part of the fuel pump removal and I wanted to check whether the heavy oil deposits you see in the pictures below are normal?

Would appreciate any pointers as to whether I should be concerned and not bother replacing the pump or carry on.

pretty normal I'd say. Get your fuel pump done, then have a look through the freelander section, ming did a good write up on cleaning it out with mr muscle (has to be done off vehicle and well rinsed out afterwards)

good luck with the fuel pump though.

Ok. t break over with I will get back down to the garage and carry on. I had a quick read about the oil catch tank in an attempt to understand what they are for. Will look into it further later.

Also interested to hear about the mr muscle for cleaning up the oil deposits

Everything looks normal to me.

Have you by-passed the EGR? - the least you should do is disable it by pulling off the braided vacuum pip and blocking it with a golf-tee or similar.

A pukka by-pass is of course the answer but even disabling it will prevent the soot particles form the exhaust mingling with the oily fumes in the air intake ducting.

Have you changed the pcv to the BMW vortex upgraded part?

Ok, thanks for confirming that it all looks ok. I will have to read up on what you propose as whilst I understand now what the EGR is I am not sure about the rest. Thanks though
