Heater blowing cold and Temp Gauge showing hot = Thermostat gone?

Hi All

Hopefully a simple answer to this one. The heater hasn't worked properly on my 90 since I bought it a month ago and it's on my ever-growing list of things to sort out. However, yesterday whilst out driving I noticed the temperature gauge was up in the red!

Daft question, and before I start stripping the heater apart, is it likely to be the thermostat causing both problems (i.e. no heat in the blower and engine over heating)? Or could it be two seperate problems?

My thermostat got stuck the otherday, heat went right up into red and bits of steam from the bonnet, then the temp dropped right down to half and the steam stopped! Heater stayed a constant mildly warm tho.. It's easy enough tochange and only costs a few quid, so may aswel swap it.

Worth buying a genuine LR one - I've had a couple of pattern ones and they've been massively inaccurate. It's worth checking the operation in a pan of boiling water with a thermometer before you fit it to the vehicle.

Perhaps air in the cooling system?
If you have air in the cooling system it will end up at the highest point of the system - at the heater.
Just start the engine and shake the coolant pipes at the heater. You might have to add coolant into the system as well.

I've got the cambelt to change too but I wasn't going to do that yet. However, to save time it looks like it'll be new fanbelt, thermostat and cambelt all in one go What joy!
