The thing to remember about the military is that the buy huge amounts of spares with any vehicle, and they have lots of free labour to keep occupied, so everything gets repaired with what ever is in the stores.

So the engine must be newer than 1960? Not that it matters much as it is still 3 main bearings. As I mentioned in a previous post, it has dual fan belts, a zig-zag finned pipe oil cooler and an oversize radiator. Also of interest is twin 10 gallon fuel tanks under the front seats. I am starting to wonder if the registration plate is original.

The chassis number on the chassis will reveal a lot. My gut feeling it is a late Series 2A ('68/69) with the ID (chassis plate and registration document) of a 1960 vehicle. So many of the features on you vehicle point to a late 2A. Why? Perhaps the military vehicle was cast as spares/repair but too good to break so given an ID of a scrapper so it could be put on the road.

Yes, I agree that it looks like the Reg has been changed. Maybe imported at some point and for some reason could not use the original reg number or maybe it was missing. Hope we can find that frame number.

Do not be supprised if you can not find a chassis number on the front dumb iron, that section is often replaced.

Then again the sills are correct for 1960. Maybe the whole front end has been replaced with newer bits and the original registration re-attached? Such a puzzle.

Only the last of the Series 2As had narrower sills, so yours could have the originals still on, or as they are easily swapped had them replaced. A previous owner could have had 2 (or more) Land Rovers, a 1960 Series 2 and a late 2A, then made one good vehicle from the best of the parts. The stamped chassis number is the key...

Hello all. It has taken a while but we have found the chassis number. It was on the outside of the front spring hanger on the passenger's side for this LHD vehicle. Number is 254 363 30
Not 100% sure of last digit.
Comments?
We also determined it has 1 central wiper motor.
