nothing if its loose

Alright. It's not loose, it tightened right up but the chamfered edge on the bolt in question was a little worn as if it had had been hit by the old follower assembly in the past. It didn't look bad enough to worry about / replace.

It would appear I have no need to worry about this. If you take a look at the retaining bolt in this photo (image linked from White 90 / Les's guide over at lr4x4 technical archive Reassembling 300TDI cam followers - LR4x4 - The Land Rover Forum)

You can see that the chamfered edge is mainly used to help locate the guide assembly and it does protrude the entire way through the guide as opposed to acting as a tapered interference fit. so.. even if it was slightly marked, the guide will be held securely by the main "shank" further up the bolt. That's that niggling thought off my mind :)

pictures are better than words

Indeed they are :D

Anyway, that only really leaves a few more possibilities for my problem now:

1) Timing out a tooth on cam
2) Tensioner / Idler problem such as collapsed / worn bearing
3) Worn cam / crank sprocket keyway(s)
4) Broken / worn woodruff keys.

If it's none of the above then feck knows! Injection pump / injectors, but as I have said previously:- The injection pump is new and the injectors have been rebuilt and tested.
