There has been a lot of discussion about Hawkeye vs BBS and one thing that seems to have come up from that is the lack of a decent instruction manual (for P38) for the Hawkeye. The Unit is aimed at the private user not at commercial repairers so surely should have some instructions on use, especially as it is now capable of programming the BeCM.

I like the unit and have used it on a number of occasions both on my P38 and those of friends. However, I do not feel confident enough to use it to its full potential through lack of understanding. Hence this poll

Please do not vote in this poll if you do not own a Bearmach Hawkeye. Thanks!

Hi, just bought one. collected it sat. Have read the brief user guide, it's very brief! Mines to use on my L322. Have still to set mine up etc , will be a this weekend job. It does appear a very basic guide that needs hugely improving. I do like the size of the buttons and it seems pretty rugged. Think a bearmach hawkeye teach in day may be in order.

Maybe a 'teach in' on the internet, every so often or perhaps when new updates are added. I think the lack of downloadable or printed instructions is the biggest problem with the system. I want to use the answers from this survey to persuade Clive Myall at Bearmach to improve after sales service and provide decent instructions but we need a few more voters and answers.

Bill, I was just thinking that since your man Clive is supporting the user group (and really its rather a good thing for them isn't it) why don't you ask him to send a mail out to all registered Hawkeye owners to let them know about it and invite them to join?

Hi Rasheed, I don't think Clive would appreciate being called 'my man'. It was not Clive I spoke to in fact, it was Alun, who has registered with the group. When I spoke to Alun it was just to make sure I was not ' treading on anyones toes' so to speak. He showed an interest and said he felt it would be a good idea.
However, I think your idea of asking bearmach to email all registered owners is a good one and I will compose an email to either Alun or Clive and make the request/suggestion.
I have emailed quite a few people so far but not many have actually registered.
I am thinking of emailing Omitec as well to see if they would be prepared to answer questions from the group.
All the best
Bill

Didn't mean to sound belittling in anyway, apologies if that is what was inferred. Just wanted to say "your contact person". Anyway, any progress? FWIW I shall be asking a couple of questions in the usergroup today, problems I've recently faced so it'll be terrific to get a reply.

Hi Rasheed, No, no progress really. Still only 5 members but I am hoping to see a few more joining. I notice that you haven't registered yet so best go to the group and register. I have sent PMs to anyone I could find on the forum who seem to have an interest in Hawkeye but have not managed to attract any more members. We need more members so we can learn from one another. Anyone reading this who would like to join a hawkeye user group please pm me with an email address and I will send an email invitation.

I've been looking at these for some time, but have some reservations, you see, I already have a Rovacom-lite, & its fine, only trouble (for me ) is that I have to cobble it all together in the cab, laptop, cables, modules, etc. etc, then place it somewhere so's not to knock it over, sit on it etc.
I also have a hand-held diagnostic tool for the VW, & although its very good, it doesn't 'do' a fraction of diags/spreadsheets etc. as the Rovacom, for instance, I can work everthing on the dash, check windows, wipers & so on.
Would you think this unit to be a match for the Rovacom?
If so, I'll get one:)
Regards

Hi Modelman,
I dont know anything about Rovacom so can't really make a comparison between it and the Hawkeye. Hawkeye is a hand held unit that cannot be connected to/has no need of a computer so no speadsheets (what ifs etc)
From what I have read on the forum I would think that Rovacom is likely to be more powerful and have more features and therefore I doubt Hawkeye would be a 'match' for your Rovacom.

However, I can carry my Hawkeye everywhere I go and it has got me out of a couple of problems while travelling. The Hawkeye is basically ia fault code reader. On the P38 It reads and clears faults in the Engine EMS, Transmission, EAS, ABS, Airbag, BeCM and Climate Control. It also has other functions such as Live Data and forcing output and actuators, useful for conducting tests etc.

One disadvantage of the system is the need for separate cables for certain modules. i.e. EAS needs a separate cable and Lucus 14CUX ECM cable. There are also adapters for some functions such as ABS, 10AS, L322 & Meduim/Low Speed CAN all of which are at extra cost. However not all are required on all cars. There is also an update cable, which I bought, but is not at all necessary.

You can find a function list here that will give you more info than I can.
