Hi all well have bought an SWB 1972 series 3 2.25 desiel. It has an over drive and also a leaking fuel tank when it is more than three quaters full but a good second hand tank was included in the sale if there is any advice as to what i shoud do with the land rover in terms of service and painting it would be most welcome and it has 83500 miles on the clock though the engine may have more or less as it was previously a petrol.

Makes sense to do a full oil/filter change engine/gearbox/transferbox/axles/front hubs/steering box. Clean air filter element and fresh oil and grease U/J's. EP90 everywhere except the engine (dont use 80w90 GL5 in the gearbox, it eats phosphor bronze)

Clean the waste oil container each time so you can check for mysterious chucks of metal. Not that it'll make much difference but it's always fun trying to guess what they are.

That way you'll know when it was all last done and you'll get to know her and probably spot one or two potential other issues as you're crawling around.

If she's on the road and you're planning on driving around I'd get all four corners up and give the wheel bearing/swivel pins a good check just for peace of mind that one isn't about to fall off. A terminal bearing isn't always obvious especially if you're not accustomed to a Series doozal.

Oooo and keep an eye on coolant level and clutch/brake fluid. If the fluid is black expect to be replacing master/slave/wheel cylinders very soon

As Beasty says get to know your vehicle and its funny ways and noises :)

Get yourself a good grease gun and some decent tools, don't need to spend big bucks, standard stuff just weird sizes :D

Have a read in here : Series III Workshop Manual - Land Rover Technical Blog

Thaks for the advice guys. Iam trying to get some pictures uploaded but it may take a day or two. Also the land rover is running long wheel base rims with firestone tyres on the rear and Rohand on the front. It also has a safari roof and has a county station wagon body. I would like to eventualy replace the tyers with something more kind to the fuel consumption and my ears so do you guys know what size and make i should get.

Do you guys know why every time i try to upload photos the are blocked by a security tag.

post a pic of the warning message...... :0)

joking aside it's much simpler to upload them to a free photo bucket account and the just paste the image links into your posts.
you can organise your pics into folders in photo bucket so it's a nice archive of all the work you do to your landy.

I hope that mileage is backed up with a comprehensive service history?:D You may want to ignore the mileage, it's probably been to the moon and back in reality! So nicely run in by now.
