Hi all I have a dilemma.i bought a 1999 landrover defender county 110 in September 2013. Nice vehicle. I did the hpi check for outstanding finance/stolen vehicle etc and it all came back good. Last week I took it for its first MOT under my ownership. The garage phoned to ask to look at the RegDoc and last mot. - which I supplied to them. The guy then refused to do the test as he discovered that the number on the vin plate and chassis differed from that on the logbook. In fact the chassis/vin plate number denotes that my 1999 defender diesel is In fact a 1981 series 3 petrol (albeit with a 1999 defender body). What to do now?????! I have sent the logbook to the DVLA with a change of chassis number to match that on the chassis rather than that on the logbook. But have I opened up a can of worms and a complete nightmare. The fact remains that I have given too much money for a vehicle that is 18 years older than advertised by the garage and sold to me. Gonna be a case for trading standards I guess. Does anyone have any thoughts
 
not necessarily - if the garage sold it "in good faith". Unfortunately the car can be taken and destroyed. The only loser is the current owner. :(.

I would think the garage has a responsibility to ensure the vehicles they sell are legal, and should have checked the VIN numbers matched the V5. Not only that, they've advertised it as a 110 when it's actually a Series 3. Does the dealer normally sell Land Rovers? If so, the differences between a S3 and a 110 should have been obvious. It sounds like someone's bought a V5 from a scrap S3 and used it to register the 110, which could be stolen. I'd report this to the police.
 
Can of worms, unless the chassis is a new one you can't send it off for a chassis number change, expect the dvla to turn up with a truck to impound it

If its a 110 body and 110 v5 that's ok so has it had a s3 chassis put onto it maybe.

Point being does it look like a 110 or s3 chassis?
 
Thanks to all. If the dealer sold it to me "in good faith" I bought it from him "in good faith" so cannot see how his interest overrides mine. He is a known land rover dealer. My land rover has a1999 defender 110 county body (and the reg doc states this) but appears to have a 1981 series 3 chassis. It has coils not cart springs, has power steering, is diesel etc - everything a 1999 defender should have. It even has an MOT from January 2013. I cannot see how this can happen. The HPI check confirmed the legitimacy of the vehicle but we used the chassis number off the V5 not the one on the vin plate.
 
Could be an honest chassis change, thing is with landrovers so many parts are interchangeable, just swapped the chassis on mine for a new galvanised one, no numbers on it and was made for a 300tdi, mines a 200, same chassis apart from engine mounts, only bonus was matching numbers before the swap and cut old number out and kept it.
Even so the genuine numbers look like they were stamped by a monkey.
Contact the garage and explain your findings see how you get on, if no joy is there any way of finding out off the chassis number if that chassis is a stolen one? If not where's the problem? It had a chassis change, there's plenty of mot stations around that don't check things like that
