Hey don't shoot the messenger... but yes it is illegal. Well... it's not exactly shutting the fuel off that is the problem. It is the fact that when the engine stops there is a chance that the poor theif might have an accident. Any damage or injury that results from the engine being cut off is the responsibility of the person who did it. So you would be very nicked. Checked it out with solicitors and CID and traffic and they all said the same thing.

One way to mitigate against it is to make it so that the fuel runs through a Murphy valve... the valve is open as long as a voltage is applied (so don't use a supply from your accessories feed!) When you click on the web site switch or send the command to the unit, it should wait until the vehicle is travelling at less than 3 mph and THEN cut the fuel.

This should combine with disabling the starter motor. The thief will try to retart the car... can't do anything so legs it. Of course then you have to hope he applies the handbrake first. If I could find a way to activate the handbrake electronically I would be laughing!
No not shooting the messenger. :violent:

just the law in our country never stops amazing me. this is just another case of there been more protection for the guilty.

to be honest though why go to the bother of having a gprs fuel cut off that is illegal or over complicated to do within the law.

surly it would be far easier to fit an fuel isolator switch in the cab or one that is activated by an alarm remote

oh and just one more thought you can go to all the expense of getting the most advanced singing and dancing trackers and gprs relays that you will be told will protect your pride and joy. but if i was in the mind to take your pride and joy i would simply turn up with a gps and gprs blocker which are easily available. this would make all the trackers and mobile phone operated switches completly useless.

yes they do work as we use them at work to block the trackers on our vans when we want to have a little jolly

filfan... you do make one or two decent points but I should stress that the isolator you refer to operates when the vehicle is unattended and you have set the device. If you jump out of your car for a minute to pay for some fuel do you set the isolator? Also this WAS only an example... there are other things that can be used.

Generally car theives are interested in getting the motor and ****ing off quick. If there is no indication of a gprs or a gsm device then it is very uncommon for a jammer to be used. If you are convinced that you would need protection from jammers it can be arranged. Do not work under the assumption that all trackers equal... to be honest very few even come close to mine simply because we designed the programming ourselves to work with high value freight transport and had to include measures to counteract simple jamming devices.

The real shame out of all this is that it is still so easy to pass on stolen vehicles and parts.

I posted a Fred the other month about how to check if a second hand engine was stolen or not. Turns out it's practically impossible.

Think there should be a national database avail to the public listing stolen vehicles and cassis, engine, axle no's etc. Anything that is traceable.

Take a look at the landywatch thread... it might be the sort of thing you have in mind.

VW Passat around 'K' reg I know had an electronic shutdown if someone broke into it and the VW garage then picks up the car on trailer to reset it as it has a randomn shutdown program and that was allowed on the roads

As for GPS tracking I would shy away as my OH would know what I was up to lol
