I'm trying to find out where the green lanes in the new forest and east dorset are if anyone knows on here ? Just got an elderly Disco and would like to start her off gently !
I bought an ordinance survey map but it doesn't say green lanes but has lots of others listed. Is it me being stupid or are they called something different on these maps ?

try contacting paul at verwood 4x4 and mini center or it might be mini and 4x4 center. located in the estate just as yer leaving verwood on the ringwood road

your looking out for BOATS Byways open to all traffic. sadly there are only a few in the new forest and fewer in Dorset. they have all been reclassified since the NERC bill came in. your going to have to travel a little north to Salisbury area to get a days lanes in.

alternatively, you could try a pay and play site. muddy bottom is in that area: Home

might be worth checking out.

I dont mind driving up to Salisbury as its only about 20 minutea away.Where can i found out the information please ?

Yes i know matchams they do drifting down there though not in discos ! They are going to build either a traveller camp or prison there according to local press. One comment was made that why dont they build a prison and put the travellers in it to save time ? !

Hi Chap,
Heard that the last off road day at Matchams was cancelled due to some kind of planning breaches, no others are planned.
The other guys are right about New Forest byways; there are only 2 or 3 which if you blink you miss them.
Dorset has 1 or 2 actual byways somewhere, I keep meaning to try to contact the Rights Of Way Officer (if D.C.C. has one) to double check on some other old unmaintained roads that I remember between Sherborne and Dorchester where I grew up.
I go all over Salisbury Plain up to the M4 corridor with other loons and keep finding new places to see and drive, (I will not say that I know it that well yet)
OS Explorer maps seem to have best up to date detail these are the ones I carry which cover a wide area:
Shaftesbury/Cranborne Chase # 118
Salisbury/Stonehenge # 130
Malborough/Devizes # 157
Newbury/Hungerford # 158
Romsey/Andover # 131
Winchester # 132
Basingstoke # 144
Warminster # 143
Not cheap at 8 to 10 quid a time, but it saves you looking at the wrong end of a rifle barrel by going out of bounds.
Hope this helps.
P.S. Should be going on a jolly in a couple of weeks, you welcome to tag along.

thanks for the information ! It's been a long time since I went off roading so that would be great to tag along !

Hi,
I'm also new to greenlaning but have discovered plenty in East Dorset - a whole circuit through Cranborne Chase between Shaftesbury and Salisbury. As it's a little muddy at the moment I'm reluctant to go alone in case I get stuck. The route is what you might call gentle but there are a couple of sticky patches. As I'm not sure of the full capabilities of the car yet, would welcome a trip around this great circuit with others at any point.

BOATS are marked with green crosses on OS map. There are also COUNTY ROADS - these are marked just as white roads (because they are proper roads not footpath-style things) which mean they get confused with people's drives, old railways and everything else. Clue: if rights of way end at a white road, you can usually assume that it's a County Road. Examples are the old drove roads across the NY Moors. Rights of Way officer may not have info about County roads as he deals with footpaths. In Kent they apparently LOST all the records of them. Best to join a club and get local knowledge.

If it's muddy and there's any chance of damaging the track you shouldn't go - gets us all a bad name. Quite a lot of BOATS have TROs nowadays - a sign says no vehicles except for access. This is not shown on OS maps.

Thanks for all the info and the offer of coming down some time next year Mad Hat Man - hope we can do that.

Typical of it down here, always seems to have buggerall in Dorset!

When I finally sort a car out I'd happily tag along on a jolly, been a while since I "borrowed" my mates Landie for some fun.

I'm over in Christchurch. Just waiting to hear back from a guy about a 92 RR so fingers crossed we'll be all systems go before Christmas then I can ask Santa for some goodies for it :D

Ok, well let us know. Wont be playing much at the moment. Greenlanes are sodden, dont want to give more excuses to the powers that be to try and ban us altogether. I think another trip to Matchams beckons and tear that up instead.
