My mates seris 3 petrol is on my drive leaking like a sieve!
I'm pretty sure its coming from gearbox/transfer box.
I asked him about it, 'been doing it ages'!FFS.

As a quick bodge, can the gearbox and transfer box be filled with grease?

He is looking for a new g/box/t/box.

Is it April 1st???

Or to put it another way. This question ranks pretty close to “I’m running low on petrol, can I fill the tank with cheese”.

Well, if someone had asked, back in those days when the first LR diesel went into production, if it could be run on chippy oil, I am pretty sure most people would have had a laugh! :D But, even Mythbusters has had a go at it. Like the rest of the thread posters so far, I do have my sincere doubts about replacing oil with grease... in any context!

In the OP, or rather his mates defence, you can put one shot grease in swivels so its not a massive leap of the imagination.

I'd probably hit you with wrench if I found you trying to put grease in my gearbox, however....

Well folks In the early 80's I had a noisy gearbox on my 86" series 1 stripped it could not find any major problems so refitted filled with oil then added small amounts of grease to the oil till it quietened down, ran it with that mix in for about 4 years with no issues. Sold the motor on and new owner was going to put a V8 into it about 2 years later the next owner got in touch with me he had bought it on a thursday and towed a caravan with it to isle of Skye that weekend. Still had the 1600 petrol engine in it and the same gearbox. Wish I could find it now to buy it back

Small amount, you might get away with it for a while. Neat grease I suspect there is a high chance of the gearbox overheating and seizing up.

Years ago, a method of selling an old knacker if the gearbox was howling was to put sawdust in the oil to quieten it. Certainly wouldn't recommend that one either.

Sure you can put grease in a gearbox ;)

Your "mate" will be needing a new one rather more quickly if he does though :D

There is one thing - it'll only leak till all the oil is gone, so leave it a bit longer, and the problem, is, .... er, .... "solved" - all on its own :D

I remember hearing a tale of some exploring blokey back in the day smashing a shed load of bananas up and craming them into his series 1 box as a 'get me home', apparently it worked, but I presume a new box was needed! :)

Re the leaking box, it is probably better to find the fix the leaks, there are only a handful of places the oil can come out. I've got that problem just now I I've been jetwashing the underside so i can see where the leak is. Its either an output seal, the borrom cover, the breather or a drain or filler. All of which can be changed in situe. After that you are looking at cracks and then it is new box time.

Probably works for a bit as well. But the smell may alert the punters to all not being well, so the sawdust may be the way to go. :)
