Grass hopper in disco!

Hello all yes a very unushal title but here goes! (300tdi disco 1997)

Basically with some of the green lanes ive been down ive picked up all kinds of stuff in the airbox for the cab vents, I was wondering if anybody has fitted a filter or wire mesh or somthing to the air intake, Where is the air intake?

yesterday after I been down some overgrown lanes I turned up the air for the cab vents and could hear noises like sticks and stuff blowing around, and a lot of dust/bits of leavs blowing out!

driving home after laning I was on a dual carrigeway when a Grass hopper hopped out of the middle vent and was hopping all over the front! (bit of a distraction!)

so just want to know where is the intake for the airbox it must be outside somewhere vunerabl to dirt ingress! and is there anyway you can put a filter of some sort on it?!

Air is drawn in from the high pressure area at the base of the windscreen through a foam filter, the grill normally has a foam strip the length of it to stop rubbish entering the heater.
The heater air intake can just about be seen, from the engine bay, it's on the near side below the screen in the void that's on the other side of the filter/grill

Oooh thanks discool I remember when I first got the disco there was a filter near the window that fell apart if I touched it, most was missing and it's all been washed away now, I'll look for a replacement of some kind, that makes a lot of sense now! Thanks.

Gonna take to work tomorrow I think I have some odd bits of foam lurking in the workshop under a pile of crap see if I can knock something up

The foam can't be to dense as it won't pass the air flow required, for my replacement I went to an aquarium shop and found filter foam in different densities and easy to find what I needed as I had a piece of the original with me, I purchased a sheet of foam around £4.25 and had enough to do three discos..

That's loads cheaper than LR want, I blagged some from a motor factors
-- for a Ford Mondeo but it fitted ...
