Hi all,

Whats the deal with the 6 speed box then? Is it interchangeable with R380s? Anyone got a newish defender with one fitted?

feels like u driving a transit van with that box... plus the tdci engine has a weird habit of revving after u lift your foot from the gas.... very irritating especially if it is tuned!
 
Its just sometimes it would be nice for that extra gear. Feels like your revving the tits off it to keep up with traffic on the motorway.
 
the trick to that is not too try and keep up with the traffic on the motorway.... you drive a defender for torque and the smile, not the speed... trust me dude, a quick defender has it`s own issues... i gotta tricked out 90 puma pickup @ work, running on 20" lrx concept wheels, chipped, silicone hoses, straight through pipe from turbo back etc etc... it is quick and will give most things a run for their money but it is also a handful and i wouldn`t like to do alot of miles in it...
 
Im not trying to win any races. I only sit at 50 sometimes 60. It just feels like it wants to change up another gear. I dont actually know what box it is. I have a 1999 td5.
 
If i was going to that sort of effort and expense , I would want to end up with something with a bit more grunt than that JMHO

I agree , and I also wouldnt want a engine that has been a unreliable pos in transits.
Just before the puma came out I spoke to a well known lr transmission expert who reckons the mt box may prove a bit unreliable longterm in the defender application
 
We haven't had much trouble with the 2.4 bar water in the fuel caused be the tank breather position which is sorted on the latter defenders. The gear box seems to be reliable too we have had a couple of intermediate shafts that join the MT to the Xfer box strip the splines but this turns out to be caused by the splines not being greased during assembly. Of course they have the 2.2 now which is a good engine in the Freelander and the same BHP and torque as the 2.4
 
When the Puma was first released, there were a lot of problems with the early MT82s. Early failures, noisyness, grinding gears, jumping out of gear etc.

Think that's been fixed now, but, as has been mentioned, I would suspect the long term longevity won't match the R380 or even LT77.
 
Honestly I have worked on them from when they were first launched and we haven't changed many boxes at all. Now 77's in Disco's, I did so many of them I could get a box out and stripped on the bench in 30 mins, my record was 6 2nd gear replacements in 5 days and I can't imagine how many stripped mainshafts and xfer inputs I have done.

Yep, same engine used in the Mondeo, Galaxy, S-Max, Citroen C5, C6, C8, Pug 407, 607, 807. Pretty good little lump! Just hardly fixable in the field with a hammer and roll of gaffa tape.

This is the trouble with all the modern stuff, too many mission critical electrics.

Hence why I think that when it comes to LR engine & box combinations, the buck stops at the 300 Tdi (non EDC) & R380.

300 Tdi -- ultimate combination of simplicity and reliability.
R380 -- stronger than the LT77 and more useable.

Together, pretty much unbeatable in Landy terms. Which is why I've just put them both into my 110 :)

There were quite a few reports on here about issues with the box back in 2007/2008. Seems to have dried up now though.

I guess it takes time for bugs to be ironed out with any component as complex as a gearbox. :scratching_chin:
