Getting more MPG out of a 200tdi

Having looked up the leak back test quite a few sites are saying that this is for starting problems. Any other tests I can do that will determine the efficiency of my injectors?

Int that just a leak back test? I found some unused refurbished injectors on eBay sitting at 2.20 just now, might keep an eye on them. Can't hurt

A leak back test determines how efficient an injector is i.e. how much fuel is getting squirted with each squirt. A faulty injector will affect your starting so its commonly used to test that but it will also help find a faulty injector, its not exclusively for poor starting issues.

Really?!? I quite often tested tractor injectors where I used to work, and I think we only charged labour costs for an hours work if that. The kit used is fairly basic too, hmm i could be in for a niche market there.

The test benches that professional places use cost around £250,000 and need specialist training, definitely not a DIY or cheap job!
 
Cheers mate, its certainly something ill look into then. You don't happen to have idiot proof instructions on carrying out the test do you? I had a look around the internet but I couldn't find anything that was simple enough :confused: unless I'm looking in all the wrong places. I know what I'm doing like, I just prefer to have it spelled out for me so I don't make any mistakes

I might be wrong then, I used to do the cracking pressures and check the spray patterns, the kit I used was definately not £250k, more like £250. Did the job though
 
Just an update on this. I put a bottle of Wynns diesel injector cleaner in it, £16 from Halfords so not cheap, and it seems to have made a very noticeable improvement. Still got some fuel left so I haven't run through the full tank yet but I'd happily recommend it. Hell of a lot of soot just inside my exhaust though, not sure if this is a bad thing or an indication of how much crap has been needing cleaned out of it

Let me know how you get on - I've a spare set of 200tdi injectors which are good. Next time I'm at my sisters (near Glasgow) I can bring them and let you try them to alleviate any dramas with yours.
 
I have been reading through all the replies here and yes , Injectors could be a cause for poor fuel economy and well worth checking or replacing. Just for your info, when I fitted a snorkel on mine I noticed the fuel economy dropped. I also had a full roof rack which I have removed. I now get approximately 40 kilometers more per tank.
 
I used to get 30mpg with my bog standard 200tdi 110 that I have slowly reduced to low 20's by putting bigger wheels and tyres, snorkel, roof rack & then chequer plate on roof rack, boosting turbo,silicon hoses, tweaking the injection pump, straight through exhaust, f-off winch bumper and front underside protection, goes like stink & I love it to bits but you can't have yeh cake and eat it :rolleyes:
 
Might take my roof rack off and see what improvement that gives. Pardon my mongness but how does a snorkel reduce fuel efficiency? Surely if its getting more clean air it would be better?
