gearbox workings n repairs: update

hi, me again hehe
well, i do not understand any workings of a td4 auto box, but have been told that my problem is 2 belts inside the box that are worn, they will get worse over time, hence need a new gearbox, @ £2500!!
(or rebuild)
i have spoke to numerous people about my problem and as most of you know i am in the process of sueing the garage i bought it from and so far so good but could take forever!

i asked Barretts if they could repair this part at a fraction of the cost but the most of the cost is the strip and rebuild... so....

does anyone know anything bout these boxes and whether this could be done?

if so, how? and i need an army of strong arms?? hehe

Do modern auto boxes have like brake bands that grip and release drums dependant on what gear it should be in??? Ive worked on big old loco hydraulic gearboxes in the past and wondered if this principle still applied? Then once box is out surely it cant be that hard to change CAN IT????

I once did the brake bands in an Austin Princess, simple to do, so based on that, personaly, I would give it a go. Shame you're so far away, I would enjoy doing that...

There are no brake bands in the box you have.

Can you describe the problem?

well, as posted a few months back, i have had nothing but problems since day one, hence taking garage to court of faulty goods etc. . .
when the car tries to change gear from 3rd to 4th n 4th to 5th it races and revs before eventually changes! drives me insane, have had it to Barretts and they say it my bands in gearbox are worn and would have been for quite some time which should have been fixed before it was sold. . .
have been quoted 2500 for a new box and no way am i paying that!!

That could just be the kick down cable needs adjusting. To loose, shift early, too slack shift late.

Might be worth getting a good local garage to check it.

ashcroft transmissions offer a same day replacement service for £1400 for that gearbox. I know it's still a lot of money, but it's cheaper than £2500. Plus they seem to be well respected within the land rover scene.

HOWEVER, not sure how you stand with your potential legal action if you have the fault repaired prior to the action. I gues you could argue that the fault makes the vehicle undriveable.

mmm back to my first post, that symptom you describe is just like the old princess i had and brake bands did do the job. It IS a shame you're not closer because i would enjoy having a go at this.. would need a good technical manual though... If there are no bands in this box then I am interested to learn just how it changes. Kick down cable, i doubt it, but try it certainly, that wouldn't be hard to check..

its not kick down cable, or it would change but it doesnt, its screams! lol
and i took it to Land Rover, are they not respectable enough?

will take it as it comes and get it fixed as n when i can, then get rid, never want another gaylander again!!! lol
