Yes you can winch with the tfer box in neutral or do the same with the tfer in low range, but the problem with that is you may overrun the cable and it will then be loose on the drum, which then screws the cable up as it then pulls into the loose layers of wire and make a right fooking mess!
People mainly use the gears as well as the winch as they have to help their electric winches, with the pto winch there no need as it will just keep pulling and pulling.
On both mine I have fitted an emergency shut down button on the wing top, makes spooling the last bit of the cable in a doddle, just as its about to go tight pop the button, engine stops and wire just nipped up nice.
I normally use 3rd gear for most winching, the only downside is they are slower than the electric ones.
Other thing to watch out for is the pto hangs down a bit low, if you google therees a guy who caught his pto and ripped it clean of the box, luckily he had the blank plate in the cab so could still get home.
I bought and modded a terrafirma trans guard to protect the pto, handy as its catchs any oil leaks to!
Its pulled me out of some right claggy **** many times.

Ah nice one at least now i kno what im doing !! Do i need anybody in the cab once i start using it, i have a what looks like a brake handle at the side of the cable drum with a big brake disc there too so im assuming thats a way of slowing it down !!

No no no!
Thats not a disc its the dog clutch, google it, really crude device but very strong.
To use the winch, pto not it, knock the winch lever over so the drum freewheels, pull the cable out, attach to whatever, with one hand apply pressure to the lever and with the other hand pull the cable off the drum, when the lever clunks over you are ready to go, in the cab engine on, dip clutch, pto lever pull out towards the bulkhead, keep foot on clutch, tfer box in neutral, select a gear, 3rd does most things, lift clutch and you are winching, DO NOT leave the cab ever whilst engine is running and pto engaged, unlike the electric winches once its pulling it will keep pulling and if you happen to get in trouble near the winch cable you are royally ####ed.

I should add no need to worry to much about where the cable goes so long as its tight, the drum will take 100 metres of 8mm cable and Im guessing 50/60 meters of 10mm cable, so the 25 mtr of 10mm most people run isnt a real problem, the smaller electric winches can only get the 25 meters on their drum if they spool it on neatly.

Hey does anybody know where i can get the flexible pipe that connects the snorkel to the air filter box and then for the filter to the turbo ??

If its a genuine defender 200tdi both are available neither is cheap
Ebay silicone hose and the size you need watch out for the real cheap stuff as some of its crap another couple of quid gets you better stuff, make sure the hose is wire reinforced to stop it collapsing
Google the pt numbers

Hey there guys, any idea if ive f**ked up my gearbox, there is a grinding sound coming from the box when u select gear but i can still select all the gears in the box... obviously if it doesnt have fluid in it there will be a grinding sound too !!

Is it possible that the grinding is coming from the handbrake drum at the transfer box, i changed the oil in both the gearbox and transfer box and still the noise is in the jeep while driving ?? Has anybody any views or experience any hints greatly appreciated ??

I think we need more info, ie you dip the clutch and got for a gear, is this when it grinds? if so its likely to be a clutch hydraulic problem, bits are cheap and easy, if messy to change, is there any fluid is the clutch master cylinder? is the bottom of the clutch pedal wet?
Handbrakes dont tend to go wrong unless you get it wet/muddy all the time, then they seize up and dont want to release

No the clutch, has fluid and finds gears and wants to go but it seems to be the handbrake drum is holding it bak ... i dont kno when the handbrake shoes were changed before.... ah i have a guy who trained as a mechanic on them looking at her on friday so im hoping its not the gearbox or the transfer box...... im dying to get her out driving again....

You can normally tell if hbrake is sticking on, drive a mile or two then feel if the hbrake drum is warm, if it is, its not releasing, mine kept doing this and after numerous strip downs I gave up and fitted the x eng disc hbrake.

Hey lynall, the pipe that goes from what i think is the egr valve on the 200 tdi is weeping oil on the head of my engine !! Firstly do i need it and secondly where can i get a new replacement ??

Never seen a 200tdi fitted with egr before.
Stick a pic up so we can see the leak

Hey guys, im trying to sell my landrover 110 defender and trying to post it here, but im finding it hard to get it up on to this site.
