Tracing it back it seems to run to Mack of bell housing. I've not seen this on my other landrovers

I guess it's needed?
What is it exactly?
What's a good after market rad?

No it's not two, it's just in a U shape. Can I use a smaller oil rad in its place.

My disco gear box uses just one row with the 'brush' around it as a standard figment placed at the front of the radiator which helps with cooling.
You could fit a panel auto box cooler in the position where your existing one is, it would look a lot smarter.
Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any spec on them for the fluid flow rate and the amount of cooling achieved.

there is a oiltemp warning switch in pipe that you need to retain

Agreed - and make sure it works too !! Though, you'd be better with a gauge, as the switch doesn't trip until 135 Centigrade - at which point, the clutch packs will have been damaged, and fluid will be toast - and require immediate change. ( have a nosy at www.bobistheoilguy.com )
