Hi guys.

I have been trying to fit a new head unit to my P38, and it didn't initially work. Me being me, I fired out the multimeter to make sure I was getting power to it. Of course, me being me, I didn't realise I don't actually have the necessary skill to perform such an action, and blew fuse 8, according to the dashboard.

Sooooo. Really hoping I haven't blown something terribly serious. Is this likely to be the case?

I will be near a Land Rover dealership tomorrow, so was just going to pop in and try to pick up a new fuse (and ask where it is located), but I'm guessing, from my google searching (that I do actually have the ability to do apparently), that its in RL7 on the fuse box. Is this correct?

Will LR pull my pants down here for a replacement? Or will it be cheap enough to not be too bothered? Where else might I be able to get this part? Is it easy to find? And will this likely solve the problem? I doubt it will solve the problem of getting my headunit to work, as I suspect that is something else, but hopefully it fixes something.

Cheers for any help.

Fuse 8 is under the Drivers seat....and its 30A - what the feck where you doing to blow a 30A fuse????

RL7 is the Auxilary Power Relay

LR Dealer will wrench the fudge out of you

How did you test for power - as this will indicate if it was you who blew the fuse

Yes, well....

I was looking for voltage carried along the yellow wire at the back of the stereo. Should have been 12 volts. So thinking I had to test it off the earth, I stuck one pin into the yellow, and one pin into the black holders in the ISO adaptors (with my multimeter set to 20 volts).

Wee spark later, and the dash said fuse 8 was blown.

Yeah, sorry, my bad. It was the white / pink I was looking at. The switched live.

Anyway, thanks for the replies, whipped a spare out, and that solved that problem. However, I now noticed another problem. My Dashboard doesn't go on until the engine has started, my clocks have all reset (trip clocks, not the odometer), and the sat-nav no longer comes on. Any ideas? Apart from go to a professional in future?

Clarky is the man to speak to on radios and stuff.

but you will find that the sat nav works through the original system. if you jave changed the HU, you may find you dont have this feature any longer.

you will also find that you might get worse sound, hisses and crackles and a lot of distortion from the new HU.

He's using one of my attenuator leads. He just received it.

And yes, the sat nav MAY not work with an aftermarket HU (never found out for definite tbh). It's s**te and outdated anyhow... :)

I have no idea about the other faults... sure you haven't blown anything else?

Yes, I have been speaking to Clarky, as he made up the adaptor lead for me. So shouldn't have any of the hisses and crackles :)

Don't know if I have blown anything else. I guess I must have since the dash isn't coming on so quick. Also, the nav did come on after I disconnected the original headunit, obviously no sound though, obviously, but the screen came on. Now it doesn't.

I will check all the fuses later. Its started raining, and is now dark up here. So will have a look tomorrow afternoon when I get back. See what I can see.

Might be time to bin that cheap multimeter though. Or try to drink less, so my hands don't shake as much. Maybe shorted the wrong wire...

Found it here:

Not in Relay 7 as I had initially though.

That fixed the AC unit, and now no longer shows up on the dash.

Tomorrow I will be checking them all though to see whats causing the sat-nav / dashboard issue. Assuming that is in fact another fuse.

i bend over and take a kick up the a**e then :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

but we did not know that at the start of the thread now did we ???????

So how come my RAVE says RL7 is the Auxillary Power Relay???

As attached....

Confused now Tony..!!!

There were fuse box changes in 99. I assure you relay 7 drives left hand blower motor see RAVE 1999 Electrical circuits. Heating and ventilation. K4 Pages 5 and 6. Fuse 8 is BECM control of a few other things as well on this line.

Yes, I suppose I should have mentioned before that its a 2000 plated Thor 4.6. Dunno how much of a difference that makes?

As said, will check other fuses tomorrow, and post the results.

Right. Fuse 1 was the cause of the dashboard not coming on until engine started, and the sat nav not coming on. Changed that out, and now All this works as it should.

Still no idea why my stereo isn't coming on though? Will investigate further on Monday when I'm sorting out my puncture...
