You certainly can't cadence brake as fast as the ABS nor can you decide which wheel to brake as the HDC does. I've got a Series 2a and the Freelander and for going downhill on ice my choice is the Freelander.
So far well impressed with the Freelanders systems.

Today is the worst snow conditions so far here. Again the Hippo performed faultlessly. Even had to rescue a collegue, who's 300 series BMW was going nowhere. I pondered lowering the tyre pressures but decided to see how it went first. As it turned out it went brilliantly.

My main route to work was blocked by a serious accident so I had to take the alternative route, which involves a lot more hills. Passed one guy who had put his hot hatch up the bank and ended up with the front on top of the hedge at the top. He must have been shifting to get up there. He was alright fortunately but had learnt the hardway about the virtues of not driving like a dickhead.

For the record the Hippo ABS / TC only chipped in once or twice during the whole 50 minute journey. I drive without intending to activate it or relying on it, but its very reassuring that you know its there 'just in case'.

I hope all you people have safe journeys during this interesting weather.
 
Regarding comparisons between "Proper" Land Rovers and Freelanders, I have a 88" Ser III and a Freelander. I know the Ser III is better off road, but not by as much as some people think, but the Freelander takes me to work, 55 miles, much of it along duel carriageways, often at speeds I'm not going to admit to here, day in day out all year round. In fact in 4 1/2 years I've done 100K miles, much as I like my Series I wouldn't want to do that in it, quite apart from using roughly twice the fuel.
When conditions do get bad in the Freelander I don't have to wrap myself up in scarf gloves and hat to drive it.
As regards the cadence braking v ABS argument, it doesn't matter how good you are, you cannot control the brakes on individual wheels.
I agree there is no substitute for good careful driving, but if you are not able to use the technology to help you, you're not as good a driver as you think you are. You do need to take the trouble to find out what it does when though.
Like others though I am often impressed at how far the Freelander will go without TC cutting in, but I suspect that is partly by using skills learnt in the Series.
 
What lucky guys, you get to play with your landy in the snow. Just love the cold, we guys in India down south have to suffer in the heat of 38 degrees.

it's like that round here, only about 4" overnight - but on the back lanes that's covering the 2" we had the other day - so there's now 4" of new snow covering a nice thick layer of ice

the verges and curbs are taking a battering with all the peeps sliding off the road - been quite a few peeps in with bent steering rods etc this morning

makes everything look quite pretty - but we need much much more of the stuff !

Finally, a man who owns both types of vehicle & can give an unbiased report of the pros & cons of both vehicles without resorting to bull****.
 
While everyone tucked up at home on Monday night, I took me Xedi around the top roads of Ilkely Moor for a bit of fun - big hills, snow drifts the lot. Sailed through the lot no problem... and I got the 3 amigos up so no electrickery to help! Sod the "get a proper..." brigade, it was the dogs bollox!

I had a great time in the snow today, found a track about 6 miles long, no one else around for miles and she
handled faultlessly, i did however pass 2 cars in the ditch on the way there.

was out in me van again today i see a freelander 2 go up a grass bank where he used the brakes on a bend and went strait on abs didn't help him i went round the corner at 3/4 of the speed and didn't have to brake or panic i slowed the van on the gears using the clutch and accelerator to control the speed of the wheels
 
Snowing again here. Pitching quickly even through the road is wet. Out in the Hippo, on my way home. In to our estate and I have to go down a short but steep hill. Approaching the hill I see an older festa in front just going over the edge. I stop to let him get though. Watch with concern as he loses traction and then does the classic bury the brake pedal responce. Locked up completely then skidded down the hill. At the bottom is a sharp right hand bend. The kerb stops his journey, which was just as well as otherwise he would have entered the driveway of a house and pushed their car through the closed garage door. He backs up and continues his journey. Probably a bit shaky and probably needing the tracking checking. My turn, off I go, down the hill in second, off the brakes, round the corner. No problem. :D

Gonna try a get some pictures tomorrow.
